Development Advisory Board

This group, consisting of alumni, faculty, local businesspeople, meets bi-annually to advise the University Librarian on matters related to fundraising, awareness and overall advancement of the Libraries. Members are appointed for renewable 3-year terms.

Biographies:

nancy bakerNancy Baker
Nancy L. Baker became the University Librarian at the University of Iowa in August of 2000, after nearly 9 years as the Director of Libraries at Washington State University and 7 years as Associate Director for Public Services at the University of Washington. Nancy earned her BA in English from the University of Connecticut in 1972 and her MLS (Masters in Library Science) from the University of Michigan in 1973. She also holds an MA degree in English from Binghamton University (SUNY), which she earned in 1978. Nancy is the co-author of A Research Guide for Undergraduate Students: English and American Literature, published by the Modern Language Association of America, and now in its 5th edition. She recently completed a term on the Board of Directors of the Association of Research Libraries and has been an active member of a variety of ARL committees. A former chair of the University Library Section of ACRL, Nancy has also served on a wide range of ALA committees over the years. In addition, she has authored articles and made presentations at national conferences primarily on library management, user education, and library services for distance education. Nancy is also an Adjunct Faculty member of the School of Library and Information Science at the University of Iowa, teaching a course in Information Policy each year. Over the course of her thirty-year career, she has held progressively responsible positions at Binghamton University, Middlebury College, the University of Kentucky, and the University of Utah.

william burgerWilliam H. (Bill) Burger has been employed as Senior Vice President and Senior Trust Officer, USA Bank, Iowa City, IA, since October, 1990. Prior to this, he was Senior Vice President and Trust Officer of The National Bank of Waterloo from 1963 - 1990.  Burger’s community service has included working with both Iowa City and Waterloo Public Libraries. He is a member of the Iowa Library Association and served as President of the Iowa City Public Library Friends Foundation. He is also active in both Iowa City and Waterloo Chambers of Commerce.  Burger is a member of the Iowa State and Johnson County Bar Associations, and an alumnus of the University of Iowa Law School, (J.D., 1963). He is married to Celia R. Burger, former principal of Irving Weber Elementary, who is currently Director of Curriculum for Breakthrough to Literacy, a McGraw-Hill Company.

mary calkinMary Calkin is retired from the Office of International Affairs in the U.S. Department of Transportation. Mary attended the University of Virginia. She and her late husband, Homer Calkin, are long-time supporters of the UI Libraries. She currently lives in Iowa City and involved in the Oaknoll community.

 

 

jeffery disterhoftJeffrey A. Disterhoft
Jeffrey Disterhoft has served in the position of CEO at the University of Iowa Community Credit Union since October of 1999. Jeff received a Bachelor of Arts in May, 1990 from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake. He is a certified public accountant and graduate of CUNA Management School, Athens Georgia and has been designated a Certified Credit Union Executive. He recently earned his Master of Business Administration from the University of Iowa Henry B. Tippie School of Management. Jeff’s work experience includes tenure at KPMG Peat Marwick as well as McGladrey & Pullen as a CPA specializing in financial institution’s audit work spanning from September 1990 until he was hired by the UICCU in May 1995 in the capacity of Vice-President of Finance. In 1997, he was promoted to Senior Vice-President of Finance & Administration. Jeff is actively involved in the community, serving on several non-profit boards.

robert fellowsRobert E. Fellows is Professor Emeritus at the University of Iowa, where he served as Head of the Department of Physiology and Biophysics. Fellows received the MD degree from McGill University and the Ph.D. degree in biochemistry from Duke University. At Iowa, he directed an active research program supported by the National Institutes of Health on the role of insulin and related peptide factors in growth and development of cellular systems, and established the Iowa Medical Scientist Training Program. In addition, he played a major role in starting the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program in Neuroscience.  He has served on many collegiate, university and national committees and is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha and Sigma Xi honorary societies. 

Phyllis J. Fleming  retired as Deputy Managing Editor at the Cedar Rapids Gazette in 2003.  Fleming stays involved with local and educationally based  journalism organizations, and is a member of the Governing Board for the Daily Iowan, the University of Iowa newspaper and a member of the Advisory Board for the University of Iowa School of Journalism.

John Fraser is the Director of the Executive Master of Business Administration program at the University of Iowa's Tippie College of Business. This educational program allows working executives to earn their MBA degrees in two years. Fraser is an alumnus of the College of Business Administration, earning his MBA in 1996.  Prior to coming to the UI in 1997, Fraser worked for more than 23 years for Amana Appliances Inc., which he joined in 1974 as manager of the company's West Coast direct account sales. More recently, he served as the manager of human resources for the plant in Amana, Iowa. He has also been an instructor for courses in sales and human relations in the Dale Carnegie program and was a three-time president of the Hawkeye Chapter of the American Society for Training and Development

charles funkCharles Funk
Charles Funk joined Iowa State Bank & Trust Company as President and CEO on November 1, 2000. Formerly, he held positions as President and Central Region Manager and Chief Investment Officer for Brenton Bank-Des Moines. A native of Lancaster, Missouri, a small town just south of Bloomfield, Iowa, Charlie was first instilled with the tradition of community banking by his father, who owned a small local bank. He is a graduate of William Jewell College. His community service includes; Former Chairman of the Board of Iowa City Area Development (ICAD); Chairman of Iowa City First United Methodist Church Board of Trustees; Board Member and Campaign Co-Chairman of the United Way of Johnson County and Chairman of the Easter Seals of Iowa from 2000-2002 and former Chair of the Little Hawks Club at City High School.

Kathleen (Kay) Halloran  is the Administrator for the Division of Professional Licensing for the Iowa Department of Commerce.  Halloran has the responsibility to oversee the professions of accountants, real estate brokers and agents, and real estate appraisers.  Prior to accepting this position, Halloran served in the state legislature where she served on or chaired several important legislative committees including the Fiscal Committee, Rules and Administration, Judiciary, Ways and Means, Ethics, Education Appropriations and Tax policy.  Her civic and volunteer work includes Board and Advisory affiliations with Tanager Place Foundation, Leadership Iowa, the 6th Judicial District Department of Correctional Services, the Catherine McAuley Center for Women and the Cedar Rapids YWCA.

George Johnson is a long-standing libraries supporter.  He served a term on the University's faculty advisory committee for the Libraries, and has been a donor for several years.  In his current research, he has been involved in projects that are in the general topic of chemometrics, which is the use of mathematical modeling to improve the analytical process.  As the course director for Introduction to Human Pathology, his interests include medical informatics (which involves the effective organization and analysis of information in health care) and media in education.  Both his research concerns and educational responsibilities are reflected in a particular connection to the Hardin Library for the Health Sciences

susan mcdermottSusan McDermott has served for the past 18 years on the Cedar Rapids Board of Education, and assumes presidency of the Iowa Association of School Boards in January 2004. In addition to her work on educational boards, Susan has recently been appointed to a 3-year term on the Iowa Public Television Broadcast Board, serves as President of the Cedar Rapids YMCA, and is a member of the United Way Board of Trustees and a member of the grant distribution committee of the Metropolitan Cedar Rapids Library Foundation.

 

Katherine Tachau is a long-time friend of the Libraries and formerly served as the chair of the University Libraries Committee, a charter committee to advise the Libraries.  Her area of study is Medieval intellectual history and the history of science. Familiar with fundraising issues, Tachau has helped to secure funds that enabled the Libraries to purchase an important but expensive replica of a medieval manuscript that will be used in classroom research.  A distinguished scholar with an extensive publications record, her recent fellowships include the Guggenheim (1999); NEH (1999) and Stanford Humanities Center (1999.)  She is also a member of the UI Center for the Book.
