Sesquicentennial Events
Spring-Fall, 2005

Librarian Film Series , October 27-30, 8pm in Shambaugh
In conjunction with the Bijou and LISSO (library school student association), we are sponsoring a series of four films about librarians. The series will be free to the public.

Campus Party , Thursday, November 3 rd, afternoon
We are inviting the campus to the Main Library for cake, punch, library tours and other fun stuff.

Sesquicentennial Celebration , Thursday, November 3 rd, 7pm in Shambaugh
Dr. Mark Edmundson, Distinguished English professor from the University of Virginia will talk about the future of the liberal arts in the university and the role of libraries. His recent book, Why Read? will be the basis of his talk. A dessert reception will follow.

Sesquicentennial Video , Thursday, November 3 rd, 7pm in Shambaugh
Current and retired faculty and library staff as well as students, alumni and the First Lady of Iowa share their thoughts about the UI Libraries past, present and future.

Staff Party, Saturday, November 5 th, 7pm in the Richey Ballroom, IMU
LSA hosts dinner and a movie for Libraries staff. We’ll be showing one of the films from the Librarian Film Series.

Branch Libraries Open Houses , September 26 – October 10, 1:30-3:30pm
Engineering, Chemistry, Business, Physics, Psychology, Biological Sciences, Geosciences, Hardin and Mathematical Sciences libraries will all be participating. Check the LIB-Events calendar for specific dates.

Library Awareness Day at Hawkeye Football , Saturday, September 3
President Skorton is hosting a brunch prior to game; the UI Libraries and librarians from around the region will be recognized on the field prior to the game; bookmarks featuring the UI Libraries (on one side and Athletics on the other) will be handed out after the game.

Memory Site, begun Fall, 2004
We have been collecting memories of the Libraries from retired faculty and staff and alumni. Check out the site for some great stories and please add your own. http://www.lib.uiowa.edu/history/memories.html

Student Essay Contest, Fall, 2005
Students will be invited to write an essay about the Libraries.

cARTalog project
Catalog cards are being distributed to book and mail artists, librarians, writers and schoolchildren for their artistic interpretations. We hope to have a mini showing of returned art later this fall.

Student Poster Contest - The Libraries awarded a first prize and an honorable mention prize to two of fifteen entries that were submitted, Spring, 2005.
