INFORMATION ARCADE CONSULTANTS
(half-time graduate assistantship)
Description: The Information Arcade Consultants serve as the primary front-line public service staff in the Information Arcade, located in The University of Iowa’s Main Library. They are expected to have a general knowledge of the electronic resources such as software and databases in the Arcade, on the Internet, and on the campus web. They are required to know how to use the major electronic resources available in the Information Arcade, including multimedia software, WWW, CD-ROMs, online databases, and instructional software. In addition, they must be knowledgeable about current research and teaching tools and methods in one or more academic disciplines.
Typical daily tasks include providing assistance to users both at the Information Arcade Service Desk and at the workstations throughout the Arcade, preparing guides and tutorials on the use of Arcade resources, teaching workshops on Arcade resources, assisting faculty members and staff teaching in the Electronic Classroom, providing basic technical support for Arcade hardware and software, and supervising Information Arcade Student Assistants.
In addition, each Consultant works on special instructional and development projects in their areas of interest and expertise.
Requirements: Must be a graduate student in good standing and planning to be in Iowa City for fiscal year (FY) 2009 (July 1, 2008 – June 30, 2009). Demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills in individual and group settings; strong commitment to service; significant experience with a broad range of electronic information technologies and computer applications on MacOS X as well as Windows XP/ Vista. Ability to learn quickly and to understand and evaluate research problems; ability to organize personal time, manage projects, and work effectively in a team environment.
Preferred Skills: Extensive knowledge of Apple’s FinalCut Studio 2 including Final Cut Pro 6, SoundTrack Pro 2, DVD Studio 2 Pro 4, and Compressor 3. In addition, successful applicants will be familiar with Adobe’s CS3 Suite of applications including Photoshop, After Effects, Premiere Pro, Illustrator, and In Design.
Salary and Appointment: This FY2009 appointment will be made at 50% time (20 hours/week) at the Graduate Research Assistant level. Salary is negotiated by COGS and the University of Iowa; the current contract runs through June 30, 2009. The full fiscal year stipend for FY2009 is $20,258. In addition to salary, fees will be waived and contract-covered employees appointed at twenty-five percent (25%) or more will receive at least $2,477 tuition scholarship each semester. The minimum tuition scholarship will be defined in relation to a full time load of nine (9) semester hours, and shall be prorated for a lesser number of credit hours enrolled.
The terms and conditions of employment, including but not limited to wages and benefits, in this position are governed by a collective bargaining agreement between the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, and UE Local 896/COGS, the union representing graduate teaching and research assistants at the University of Iowa.
