Reserve Policies and Guidelines for Instructors

Policies

Lists are processed in the order they are received. They may take up to three weeks to process. If, as the semester progresses, you add an item, remember that it may take several days to process.

Please do not assign Reserve readings until you receive confirmation that your list has been processed. We’ll also let you know if any items are not available.

There is a maximum of 25 books per course. Recommended readings will not be placed on Reserve.

Please provide photocopies of articles and/or chapters of books. The library can photocopy up to 5 articles per course but this will substantially slow down the processing time.

Journal articles, book chapters, lecture notes, and non-copyrighted material will be made available on ICON course web sites: http://icon.uiowa.edu/index.shtml.

Lists without full citations for photocopies and/or author, title, call number books will be set aside to be processed last, as they require more time to process. If we have to contact you to obtain the citation, this will substantially slow down the processing time.

We have copies of some reserve lists used in the past, which may be re-used, updated, or adapted for the coming semester.

If we don’t own a requested title, we will rush order it but it may be several weeks before it’s available.

Please include a copy of the syllabus or reading list for the Reserve book. This syllabus helps your students find the correct readings.

Guidelines for Lists

Please provide the course name and number plus your name, university address, and e-mail address. You may give us paper copies of the lists (obtained from the Art Library's service desk) or fill out the Art Library Online Reserve Request Form.

Please list books and photocopies separately on the paper/online form arranging them alphabetically by author. A syllabus it is not a substitute for the list/s. Please list ALL materials you want on reserve. For example, if you want the texts on reserve include them on the list. If you want your students to use books on Permanent Reserve please include them on the list to make it easier for your students to find the right books.

Books

Library Owned Books:
Please list the author’s name, the title and the UI call number, loan period (2 hour or 3-day).

Personal Copies of Books:
Please list the author’s name and the title. If you provide personal copies of books or photocopies for Reserve, we will make them non-circulating (2 hour in-library loan period) unless you indicate otherwise. Even so, please be aware that these items are often heavily used and may be stolen. We cannot replace or repair personal materials.

Photocopies

Please provide a complete citation whether you provide the photocopy to us or we create the photocopy.

Journal articles, book chapters, lecture notes, and non-copyrighted materials will not be available for checkout in paper form but will be made available on ICON course web sites: http://icon.uiowa.edu/index.shtml.

Due to copyright regulations, we can post only one book chapter per book on ICON. If you will be assigning more than one chapter from a given book, include the book on your book list and we will place the hard copy of the book on reserve.

Please submit your material single-sided on 81/2 x 11 inch paper, without staples or paperclips. Note: folded or dog-eared paper and black borders around your photocopy cause problems with scanning and printing. Please submit your copy as clean as possible. Or submit via a PDF attachment to: lib-art@uiowa.edu
