THIS IS THE PRIMARY LITERATURE (the original data.)

V.

Computer indexing services find results and list.

THIS IS THE SECONDARY LITERATURE (where you find out about primary literature.)

VI.

THIS IS ALSO SECONDARY LITERATURE.

VII.

Entered into encyclopedic sources or other kinds of review articles.

THIS IS THE TERTIARY LITERATURE (where you find synthesized knowledge.)

FINDING INFORMATION:
One always starts out working backwards (like traveling back through time) when finding literature. Use the tertiary literature to gain understanding and find data.
Use the secondary literature to focus in on specifics and make sure nothing has been missed.
The primary literature fleshes out you knowledge and helps give you new ideas.

THE VIRTUAL LIBRARY............

Print VS Electronic resources

Some resources only electronic (Chemfinder, web pages, etc.), most secondary & tertiary are in both formats

Most resources one must use older in print and newer in electronic - this is rapidly changing (CC, SciFinder, e-journals)
Some resources are the same in both formats - better ones are different and take advantage of new environment
Some electronic resources are web based, other are still on CD. CD only are more site restricted.
