Compound Searching in Chemical Abstracts

To open the Compound Search window, please click Substance button image

The Compound Search window looks like this:

substance hierarchy window image

For example, if you type "penicillin" in the "Find" section, the browse window will be as follows:

And then double clicking "penicillin" gives us the following results:

A new substance hierarchy window is displayed that identifies the entries nested inside the selected heading. Because this is an expansion of a substance from the First Level headings, it's referred to as Second Level of the hierarchy.

The Second Level of the hierarchy contains links to: Documents for index
headings that have no subordinate parts.

Subordinate headings are grouped into three categories:

  • Subdivided, where the substance names may contain additional substituent and stereochemical distinctions within each subdivision
  • Stereochemistry, where each of the subordinate entries is a link to documents
  • Modified, where the substance names are distinguished by various name modification and stereochemical descriptions

You may continue to expand substances preceded by a + symbol to see
the nested entries by selecting the term and clicking expand button image.

This displays the Third Level entries.

If you wish to collapse substances preceded by a - symbol, click collapse button image

Click document button image to display search results.
