Molecular Formula Searching in Chemical Abstracts

Browsing is also an excellent way to search for molecular formulas. Molecular formulas should be in Hill Order. For organic compounds, C is listed first, followed by H, then by the remaining elements in alphabetical order.

For example:

C3H7OOCC6H4COOCH3 is C14H16O6

  (NH4)2SnC6 becomes C6H8N2Sn

First choose Formula in the Index window. Second, select the molecular
formula which corresponds to the compounds you are interested in.

Then click search button image

The Search Function can also be used for searching Molecular Formulas.

First click search button with magnifying glass image You will get following interface:

Type in the formula and select Formula in Search Fields.
Then click on search button image

Molecular Formula Hierarchy

The Formula Hierarchy is a list of molecular formulas in alphabetical order.
Substance names are arranged with a hierarchical organization. Formulas
having a large number of document references are subdivided into groups
by chemical name subdivisions.

Subordinate headings are grouped into three categories:

  • Subdivided, where the substance names may contain additional substituent and stereochemical distinctions within each subdivision, e.g., oxiranemethanol (SUBSTITUTED)
  • Qualified, where the substance names may contain additional categorized subdivisions of the heading
  • Stereochemistry, where each of the subordinate entries is a link to documents
  • Modified, where the substance names are distinguished by various name modification and stereochemical descriptions

You may continue to expand a substance preceded by a + symbol to see its nested entries by either double clicking the term or selecting the term and clicking expand button image.

This displays the third level entries.

Click on document button image to display search results.
