SciFinder Scholar

The University Libraries and the Chemistry Department have together purchased access to SciFinder Scholar 2006 for UI students, faculty and staff. SciFinder Scholar 2006 is a desktop client which allows you to search Chemical Abstracts & MEDLINE by author and topic. You can also search Chemical Abstracts for chemical structures or substructures, reaction information, find commercial sources for compounds, browse the contents of journals, link to the full-text of articles and patents, and more. To install the client, follow the directions below (please note you must perform the sire.prf step after installing the client or you will not be able to connect to the databases). If you have any problems, call the Chemistry Library at 335-3085.

Windows

1. Click on this link, sfs2006.exe, and save the file to a temporary folder or to your desktop. (This is a self-extracting file which will install the client on your computer. This file does not access the databases and can be deleted after you install the client.)

2. Execute the file you saved by double-clicking the file name, sfs2006.exe, in the temporary folder or on your desktop. Follow the prompts to complete the installation, usually you should just accept the default answers. When asked whether you have a disk for Custom Site Files, say No.

3. After installing SciFinder Scholar 2006, click on this link, site.prf, and save the file to the folder where you installed SciFinder (if you accepted the defaults, save this file to the folder called "SFSCHLR" on your c: drive).
