FAQs

  1. I get an error message: Unable to display Icon... Because the following error occurred: "Xtra failed, other objects may also fail to appear..." [Up]

We found the newest version of WinZip (available at WinZip.com) doesn't seem to cause the problem, however older versions (particularly v7.x) do sometimes cause a problem. The Xtras become extracted to the wrong location. Here are your options:

    1. a) first, double-check that you have QuickTime 3.0.2 of higher installed on your computer. The 3D models will not run without this system enhancement. It's available for free from Apple Computer. http://www.apple.com/quicktime/

    2. b) download the newest WinZip utility, version 8 or Aladdin's Expander (http://www.aladdinsys.com/expander/index.html) , which is a great product and FREE.

Then download/extract our skull software file again. NEW! - See FAQ 3 (below) for related help.

  2. Is there any way to download faster? When starting the download it said it would take 1 hour and 45 mins... [Up]

We can't do anything on our end about the speed of your Internet connection. Please be assured that our two servers are connected via high speed lines (T1 or better) to the Internet. If you're attempting to download via a home computer and modem, it will simply take time because your connection is slow. We can't compress/reduce the size of our software any more than we have already. We're sorry this isn't much consolation.

  3. I'm having difficulty with the file [skull.sit or skull.zip] I downloaded. It doesn't seem to work when I double-click on it. Help!? [Up]

The file you have downloaded from our site is compressed. This compressed "archive" contains the Bones of the Skull program, the 3D model files, and some other resource files. To uncompress the file [skull.sit or skull.zip] you need *another* piece of software. We can recommend several possibilities, but for simplicity sake, try Alladin Systems' Expander for Windows or Macintosh. You can download this FREE Expander software from: http://www.aladdinsys.com/expander/index.html. Once you've installed the Expander software, you do not need to download our file [skull.sit or skull.zip] again. Click and drag our file on top of the icon of the Expander software to start the uncompression process!

  4. Can Bones of the Skull be networked from a server? [Up]

We've tried this with mixed results. A lot depends on the speed and capacity of your server, the network lines from your server to the computers accessing the software, the number of simultaneous users... Try it; you don't have anything to lose. Just drag the entire folder of files to your server; there's no "network installer" utility needed. Our licensing allows you to serve this software within your institution or organization. We do not recommend networking the CD-ROM version. If you find your server experiments unsatisfactory, you can load the Bones of the Skull on as many of your harddrives as you like. For more information about our licensing, please refer to our on-line license agreement.
