Informtion Commons WEST:
The "new" classroom (circa 1999). The WEST classroom offers 25 student workstations, seating for 50 if you double up. Workstation tables are mobile, providing opportunity to reconfigure the space. Suggested configuration maps will appear soon on this page and elsewhere on the web site. The WEST classroom also can be split into two fully-functional classrooms with a heavy-duty, floor-locking, sound-proof partition.
Side A features nine workstations while Side B features 16. Concurrent sessions are possible--room control (lighting and AV/projection) can be split. This is a learner-centered space. There is no fixed instructor station per se, but instead we offer two mobile instructor carts that can plug in to three points in the floor. This space is terrific either for large- or small-group sessions with an emphasis on learner-centered activities (lab sessions, student work groups, etc.).
Instructor resources: Bright, ceiling-mounted data projectors, Elmo visual presenter, wireless microphone. Two mobile instructor carts, each featuring an LCD color-touch screen with easy room controls.
Hardware: Dell Optiplex GX620 (Small Form Factor), Pentium D, 3.0 GHz x2, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB, Hard Drive, DVD ROM/CD-R Drive, 17" LCD Monitor, SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio, USB device connectivity.
Operating system: Windows XP Pro SP2 or Red Hat Linux.
Server access: Internet/Web, Medicine_Ed and the Information Commons server.
Pre-installed software: MS Office Suite, Internet clients (web browsers, etc.), specialized computer-based learning software for the health sciences.
