Important New Models Added to the Collection, 2001

Three new models were added to the collection in 2001. These were produced by Shanna Leino. A late Coptic binding (#49) was based on Hamuli codices as described in J.A. Szirmai, The Archaeology of Medieval BookBinding, 1999. The (#50) Armenian (17th c.) and (#51) Greek (14th c.) binding models were based actual exemplars in the Goodspeed collection at the Regenstein Library of the University of Chicago.

All three are magnificent examples of historical binding structure and binding craft skill. Shanna produced the finishing tools needed to produce the blind decorations as well as all the hardware of the closures including bone pegs and metal bosses and pins. The complex endbanding on all three models is elegantly completed and the proportioning of features and handling of covering materials is exceptional, meeting the high standard of technique established for the model collection by Bill Anthony.
