There are other electronic resources that are accessible from different library Web pages that may also be useful to liberal studies students. American Periodical Series I (UI access only)
ProQuest's American Periodical Series I (APSI), covering 18th-19th century publications, provides full text of articles. Choose "deep backfile" in the date range.

Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature (UI access only)

Applied Science and Technology (UI access only) Full text, 1983-present.

ArchivesUSA (UI access only)
Chadwyck-Healey's automated combination of traditional manuscripts finding aids, including The National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections (but not including RLIN's AMC file; for that, request Reference assistance), this search tool indexes the holdings of more than 4,400 American repositories, amounting to some 100,000 collections. It is restricted to UI searchers, one at a time. A UI searcher may be bumped off after 15 minutes if another UI searcher begins a search. UI possesses a CD-ROM version, use of which entails no such difficulties, but the information it contains is less up to date, and it is accessible from the UI Main Library only.

arXiv.org e-Print archives (UI access only)
Collection of electronic pre-prints in various sciences. The archive is based upon activities supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation under agreement with the Los Alamos National Laboratory, and by the U.S. Department of Energy.

ATLA Religion Database (UI access only) American Theological Library Association's Religion Database

Bibliography of the History of Art (UI access only) Bibliography of the History of Art contains records describing current literature about art. Materials indexed include books, dissertations, exhibition catalogs, and articles drawn from more than 2,500 periodicals. Subject coverage includes Western Art, architecture, decorative and applied arts, popular and folk art, and selected contemporary art, as well as painting, sculpture, drawing, and prints.

Biological Abstracts (UI access only)
Biological Abstracts encompasses the entire field of life sciences and provides comprehensive coverage of the world's published biological and biomedical research. This includes traditional areas of biology, such as botany, zoology and microbiology, as well as experimental, clinical and veterinary medicine, biotechnology, environmental studies, and agriculture. Interdisciplinary fields such as biochemistry, biophysics and bioengineering are also included. More than 6,500 serials are monitored for inclusion.

Books in Print (UI access only) Bowker's Books in Print is an up-to-date listing of books, audios and videos currently available from American publishers, but includes some foreign book publishers, especially British. You may search the awards section for winners of Academy Awards, Grammies, etc.

A collection of electronic books, chiefly in the field Computer Science.

CIOS/ComAbstracts (UI access only) This database contains abstracts of articles published in the discipline of communication studies and related fields (e.g., journalism, rhetoric, mass communication, and social linguistics).

CIOS/Comserve Journal Index (UI access only) This system allows you to perform electronic searches of 41 core serials and annuals in the discipline of communication studies and related fields (e.g., journalism, rhetoric, mass communication, and social linguistics).

Digital Dissertations (UI access only)
With more than 1.6 million entries, the UMI Proquest Digital Dissertation Abstracts database is the single, authoritative source for information about doctoral dissertations and master's theses. The database represents the work of authors from over 1,000 graduate schools and universities. Full text is available for University of Iowa dissertations from 1997 to the present.

EBSCOhost: Academic Search Fulltext Elite (UI access only) Features full text for over 1,000 journals, abstracts and indexing for over 3,100 scholarly journals, and coverage of The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and The Christian Science Monitor.

EconLit (UI access only) Indexes and abstracts more than 450 international economic journals and contains more than 350,000 records, covering 1969-present.

EEBO: Early English Books Online (UI access only) From the first book published in English through the age of Spenser and Shakespeare this collection contains over 96,000 titles listed in Pollard & Redgrave's Short-Title Catalogue (1475-1640) and Wing's Short-Title Catalogue (1641-1700) and Thomason Tracts and their revised edition.

EEBO-TCP: Early English Books Online -- Text Creation Partnership (UI access only) Searchable text-based version of the page images available in EEBO: Early English Books Online, an online corpus of the titles published between 1475 and 1700 listed in Pollard and Redgrave, Wing, and the Thomason Tracts catalogs. The marked-up text provides full keyword searching, allowing scholars to pinpoint even minute references to their subjects as they appeared in a wide variety of early modern works. The search interface also allows scholars to uncover repeated word patterns across texts that ten years ago were only available in archives or on microfilm. Links from this text version to the page images are planned.

Elsevier ScienceDirect (UI access only) . Full text collection of over 1 million articles from 1995 to present, covering a wide variety of subject areas and disciplines in the life sciences, physical sciences, and social sciences. ERIC (UI access only) The most important index for education-related topics.,ERIC is an electronic database integrating two print indexes. The Current Index to Journals in Education (CIJE) covers journal articles, and Resources in Education (RIE) covers many types of materials, including conference papers and grant-sponsored research reports. Essay and General Literature (UI access only) 1985-present.

Feminae: Medieval Women and Gender Index An index to over 300 journal articles, book reviews, and essays in books about women, sexuality, and gender during the Middle Ages. Books written by a single author are not indexed. Time period covered is 450 C.E. to 1500 C.E. Geographic area is Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Subject coverage for gender and sexuality means that articles on masculinity and male homosexuality are included. Publications in English, French,German, and Spanish are currently being indexed.

FIAF (International Film Archive) (UI access only) International index to film/TV periodicals, Thesaurus & abbreviations of countries, List of periodicals indexed, [and the] FIAF databases: List of FIAF members, Bibliography of FIAF members' publications, Directory of film/TV documentation collections, Treasures from the film archives, Bibliography of Latin American cinema.

FirstSearch (UI access only) Includes access to WorldCat and MusicLiterature.

Foreign Relations of the United States (FRUS) FRUS begins with the administration of Abraham Lincoln. Two cumulative indexes cover 1861-1899 and 1900-1918. The series provides official documentary history of major foreign policy decisions that have been declassified and edited for publication. FRANCIS (UI access only) A multilingual and multidisciplinary bibliographic database [covering] Humanities: archaeology, history of art, history of science, linguistics, literature, philosophy, prehistory, religions; Social sciences: administration, Latin America, computer and law, education, ethnology, geography, health (RESHUS), sociology; Economics: economy (ECODOC), energy economics, management (DOGE).

GenderWatch (UI access only) A full-text database; contains periodicals, academic journals, newsletters, magazines, regional publications and government reports focused on gender and women's issues.

GeoRef (UI access only) References and selected abstracts to the world's literature in geology, covering North America since 1785 and other areas since 1933. Corresponds to the print publications: Bibliography of North American geology; Bibliography and index of geology exclusive of North America; Geophysical abstracts (Washington, D.C.); and: Bibliography and index of geology; with additional citations from other sources..

Handbook of Latin American Studies Contains scholarly evaluations of books and book chapters as well as conference papers and articles published worldwide in the field of Latin American studies. Covers social sciences and the humanities in alternate years.

HAPI: Hispanic American Periodicals Index (UI access only) HAPI contains citations to articles published since 1970 in more than 400 scholarly journals treating Latin American or U.S. Hispanic topics. Coverage includes Spanish, Portuguese, English, French, German and Italian language articles.

Health and Psychosocial Instruments (UI access only) Available through Ovid Online, providing ready access to information on measurement instruments (i.e., questionnaires, interview schedules, checklists, index measures, coding schemes/manuals, rating scales, projective techniques, vignettes/scenarios, tests) in the health fields, psychosocial sciences, organizational behavior, and library and information science.

Health Reference Center (UI access only)
InfoTrac database option. Provides indexing and select full-text materials for nursing and allied health plus a wide variety of personal health information sources including: journals, newsletters, pamphlets and reference books.

Historical Abstracts (UI access only) Historical Abstracts includes coverage of European history from 1850 to the present. The database provides citations with abstracts to articles in some 2000 journals. It also contains bibliographic citations of books and dissertations.

Historical Newspapers Online (UI access only)
The London Times, nineteenth- and twentieth-century history: Palmer's Index to The Times, 1790-1905, Official Index to The Times 1906-1980.

IDIS: Iowa Drug Information Service (UI access only) Indexes pharmacy and medical English language journal articles since 1966, and provides full text of articles published since 1997. Indexes identify drugs and diseases covered in each article and also whether articles contain information on pharmaceutics, dosage, administration, drug/laboratory test/food interactions, side effects and incompatibilities, toxicity. Terms are cross-referenced with synonyms and common names in a thesaurus. IDIS is updated monthly. (Click "Login" when prompted for Username/Password.)

IIBP: International Index to Black Periodicals (UI access only) IIBP Full Text includes current and retrospective bibliographic citations and abstracts from over 150 scholarly and popular journals, newspapers and newsletters from the U.S., Africa and the Caribbean--and full-text coverage of 25 core Black Studies periodicals (1998 forward)."

Index to Early American Periodicals
"The three 'Indexes to Early American Periodicals' cover three separate time periods from 1741 to 1935 and are thought to include all known periodical publications that had their inception and ending during this time period. The actual periodicals are on microfilm in three microfilm collections of the same names (often referred to as APS I, APS II and APS III)."--from the Web site

Index to English Literary Periodicals, 1681 to 1941
Indexes the microfilm collection English Literary Periodicals Series (ELPS), which consists of 233 titles published during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries in England concerning a variety of subjects--theater, art, music, history, politics, sociology, philosophy, economics, religion and science, as well as the English slant on life in America and the American Revolution. Covers English writers such as Defore, Steele, Addison, Swift, Fielding, Johnson, Smollett, Dickens and Thackeray.

Index to 19th-Century American Art Periodicals (UI access only) Indexes 42 art journals published in the US during the 19th century, providing nearly complete coverage of journals from this period. The Index describes the entire journal contents -- articles, art notes, illustrations, stories, poems, and advertisements -- and offers information on popular culture and industry, artists and illustrators, painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, architecture and design, exhibitions and sales, decorations, and collecting.

International Medieval Bibliography (UI access only) International Medieval Bibliography covers the European Middle Ages (c450-1500). It provides over 200,000 entries from 4,000 periodicals and 5,000 miscellany volumes, published from and including 1967. The CD-ROM is accessible only from a single workstation in the Main Library Reference Area.

International Pharmaceutical Abstracts (UI access only) Provides worldwide coverage of pharmaceutical science and health related literature from 1970 to the present, and is updated monthly. Comprehensive information is included for drug therapy, toxicity, and pharmacy practice as well as legislation, regulation, technology, utilization, biopharmaceutics, information processing, education, economics, and ethics as related to pharmaceutical science and practice.

Internet and Personal Computing Abstracts (UI access only)
Provided by Cambridge Scientific Abstracts (CSA) internet database service, this index for offers two selections: internat & personal computing abstracts, and NTIS. Records link directly to InfoHawk for library catalog searches.

LEXIS-NEXIS Academic Universe (UI access only) Provides access to a wide range of news, business, legal research, medical and reference information. The news section provides access to full text of newspapers from the U.S., Europe, Africa, North and South America and Australia in English, as well as some in Dutch, French, German, Italian and Spanish; news wires, television and radio transcripts are also available.

LexisNexis Congressional (UI access only)
"The world's most comprehensive access to U.S. legislative information from Congressional Information Service, Inc." U.S. Congressional materials: members and committees, bills, laws, hearing transcripts, committee prints, documents, the Congressional Record, Federal Register, Code of Federal Regulations, U.S. Code.

LexisNexis Government Periodicals (UI access only)
Provides detailed subject and author indexing of over 170 federal government publications from 1988 to the present. Updated quarterly (March, June, September, December); each update covers more than 2,000 articles. Provides bibliographic and contact information for each publication, and links to online editions when available.

LexisNexis State Capital (UI access only)
Provides access (often full-text) to legislative materials from all fifty states since 1990. Searchable by individual state or across many states. Includes bill tracking, statutes, regulations, legislative directories and committees.

LexisNexis Statistical (UI access only)
Provides abstracts and indexes of statistical information from over 100,000 U.S. government publications from 1973, state and private sources from 1980, and approximately 2000 documents from international organizations from 1983. Incorporates ASI subject and keyword searching. Full text or web links provided for some citations.

Linguistics & Language Behavior Abstracts (UI access only)

Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts (UI access only) Non-evaluative abstracts of articles from approximately 2,000 serials published worldwide.

MEDLINE (UI access only)
Covers the international literature on biomedicine, including the allied health fields and the biological and physical sciences, humanities, and information science as they relate to medicine and health care. Information is indexed from approximately 4600 journals published world-wide. Use the URL above for all years 1966-present.

National Technical Information Service
The National Technical Information Service is a federal agency that collects technical, scientific, business, health, and social sciences research materials produced by the U.S. government, foreign governments, and other organizations throughout the world. The NTIS database contains records for 2.5 million titles that summarize products collected by NTIS from 1964 to the present; some materials date back to the late 1940 s. The collection covers more than 375 scientific, technical, engineering, and business related subjects. Information in the collection is available in the forms of reports, videos, software, and data files. Consult Government Publications staff for assistance in determining whether any of the University's libraries hold items that interest you.

netLibrary (UI access only) A collection of electronic books, chiefly in the fields of Business and Computer Science.

Includes Poole's index to Periodical Literature 1802-1906, Stead's Index to Periodicals 1890-1906, Jones & Chipman's Index to Legal Perioidcal Literature 1786-1922, Richardson's Index to Periodical Articles in Religion 1890-1899, and Cumulative Index to a Selected List of Periodicals 1896-1899.

Ovid Online (UI access only) Provides access to major medical and life sciences databases.

PAIS International (UI access only) PAIS International covers the literature of public affairs including political, economic and social issues. PAIS International contains references to articles, books, government documents, statistical directories, research reports, conference reports and publications of international agencies. Publications from more than 60 countries are included.

Periodicals Index Online (UI access only) Electronic index to thousands of periodicals in the humanities and social sciences, covering each periodical from its first issue (as early as 1790) to 1990/91. Every article is indexed. The scope is international, including journals in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and other languages.

Provided by Cambridge Scientific Abstracts (CSA) internet database service, this index offers two selections: pollution abstracts and NTIS. Records link directly to InfoHawk for library catalog searches.

PsycARTICLES (UI access only)

PsycINFO (UI access only) Available through Ovid Online, the PsycINFO database covers the professional and academic literature in psychology and related disciplines including medicine, psychiatry, nursing, sociology, education, pharmacology, physiology, linguistics, and other areas. PsycINFO's coverage is worldwide, and includes references and abstracts to over 1300 journals in more than 20 languages, and to book chapters and books in the English language. Over 50,000 references are added annually. Popular literature is excluded.

PubMed (UI access only)
Provides access to bibliographic information in MEDLINE and other sources.

Readers' Guide Retrospective (UI access only) Database containing comprehensive indexing of the most popular general-interest periodicals published in the United States. Current coverage is1963 through 1982, though the complete database will include 1890-1982. Available through WilsonWeb.

Social Work Abstracts (UI access only) Social Work Abstracts includes article abstracts from 450 social work journals.

Sociological Abstracts (UI access only) Provides article abstracts from 1,800 journals in sociology.

The Web of Knowledge Citation Databases (UI access only) A citation database that includes the Science Citation Index, the Social Science Citation Index, and the Arts and Humanities Citation Index. Coverage goes back to 1987.

Electronic Journals

E-Journals (UI access only) The UI Libraries subscribe to a large number and variety of full-text electronic journals. Through this Web site, users can locate journals alphabetically by title. In addition, a search box allows users to find a specific title quickly, and also, users can locate titles with particular keywords.

Congressional Universe (UI access only) "The world's most comprehensive access to U.S. legislative information from Congressional Information Service, Inc." U.S. Congressional materials: members and committees, bills, laws, hearing transcripts, committee prints, documents, the Congressional Record, Federal Register, Code of Federal Regulations, U.S. Code.

Statistical Universe (UI access only) Provides abstracts and indexes of statistical information from over 100,000 U.S. government publications from 1973, state and private sources from 1980, and approximately 2000 documents from international organizations from 1983. Incorporates ASI subject and keyword searching. Full text or web links provided for some citations.

U.S. Federal Documents Index U.S. Federal Documents Index contains records for a large number of publications issued by the federal government since 1976; the index supplements federal documents records already found in InfoHawk's UIowa Libraries Catalog. Very detailed records for Bureau of Labor Statistics and Geological Survey publications, for example, will be found only in the U.S. Federal Documents Index, and records for federal online databases will always appear first in U.S. Federal Documents Index before appearing in InfoHawk's UIowa Libraries Catalog.
