Services in support of:
Digital collections | Metadata collections | E-publishing initiatives
E-publishing initiatives include locally published open access electronic journals,
electronic books and other monograph-type resources, virtual exhibitions, etc. These
resources are typically born-digital and are discrete publishable items. DLS support for
e-publishing initiatives is part of the University Libraries' broad strategy to provide
support for changes in scholarly communication and to address concerns of increasing
volume and cost of scholarly resources in the traditional publishing process.
DLS services in support of e-publishing initiatives include:
- Publishing standards - advising on common publishing expectations, including
ISSN/ISBN registration, serial numbering, and predictable citation format
- Archiving - providing a local archiving service and facilitating participation in national
archiving initiatives (such as LOCKSS)
- Dissemination - creating full catalog records for inclusion in InfoHawk, when
appropriate, and for export to national bibliographic utilities, identifying relevant
abstracting and indexing services, and facilitating inclusion in directories and other
catalogs
- Hosting - providing space to host the publication on a library server
Open standards - providing support for standards such as OpenURL and encouraging
best practices such as persistent and predictable deep-linking
In addition, DLS oversees InPress@Iowa, the University Libraries' electronic press, which
is part of the Iowa Digital Library.
