Using Iowa Research Online for data management
A growing body of federal granting agencies now require data management plans, including the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institutes for Health (NIH), and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).
The University of Iowa Libraries provides a long-term archive and preservation service for datasets under 50 GB to support national grant requirements. Datasets are typically hosted in Iowa Research Online, the University’s institutional repository, a service of the Libraries’ Digital Research & Publishing. Researchers expecting to preserve files larger than 50 GB should discuss their special needs with DRP.
Deposit in Iowa Research Online provides:
- a permanent URL
- secure replicated storage (multiple copies of the data, including onsite and offsite storage)
- accurate metadata
- a globally accessible repository
- the option for contextual linking between data and published research results

A group of major research institutions is partnering to develop a flexible online tool to help researchers generate data management plans. This effort is in response to demands from funding agencies, such as the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), that researchers plan for managing their research data.
