Student Employment FAQ

How do I apply for student employment in the Library?
To apply, follow this link to our online Student Employment Application. Or stop in and pick up a paper application from the Libraries’ Administration Office, 5031 Main Library (south end, 5th floor), between 8 am and 5 pm, Monday through Friday. Applications are continuously accepted and kept on file for the duration of the semester for which you apply. Applications cover openings in all departments within the Main Library as well as the Art Library, Rita Benton Music Library, Sciences Library, Lichtenberger Engineering Library, Marvin A. Pomerantz Business Library, and Hardin Library for the Health Sciences.

How is my application handled?
Once your application is received, it is made available to all hiring supervisors. If you’re applying for a specific opening, we’ll make that supervisor aware of your application when it is received. Supervisor(s) contact applicants directly if they are interested in setting up an interview.

How do I know what positions to apply for?
Most vacancies are advertised on Jobnet; however, we try to fill our vacant positions with applications we’ve already received before advertising. A list of all known vacancies is kept in the Libraries’ Administration Office.

What happens if there are no vacancies?
Applications are continuously accepted even if there are no vacancies. When vacancies occur, the hiring supervisor reviews applications currently on file before they consider advertising. If you would like, you can specify department/location preferences on your application.

Am I able to apply for all of the open positions?
You can apply for any/all position(s) as long as you are a registered University of Iowa student. Work-Study is often preferred among student supervisors within the Libraries, but we do offer part-time employment as well.

What is Work-Study and am I eligible?
Work-Study is a form of Financial Aid. There are certain requirements that must be fulfilled in order to be eligible for Work-Study. We highly recommend that you apply for Work-Study every academic year and summers that you are taking classes. For more information, please contact the Office of Student Financial Aid, 208 Calvin Hall, 319-335-1450.

If you have additional questions, please email us at or stop in to the Libraries’ Administration Office, 5031 Main Library (south end, 5th floor), between 8 am and 5 pm, Monday through Friday.
