It is commonly held that Achille St. Onge was the most eminent artisan in the field of miniature book publishing. He commissioned the finest craftsmen, both in the United States and in Europe, to print and bind his works, e.g., Sangorski & Sutcliffe of London, Joh. Enschedé en Zonen in Haarlem, Holland, and Reliure d'Art du Centre, Limoges, France. His selection of appealing text and his attention to the paper, font, illustration, and design of his works set a new standard in miniature book production in the twentieth century. If St. Onge was dissatisfied with the final result, as he was with The Inaugural Address of Thomas Jefferson (1943), he destroyed all copies in his possession. Thus, only 30 copies from the initial run of 1,000 of that title are all that remain.
Achille St. Onge issued his first miniature title Noel, Christmas Echoes Down the Ages in 1935, and continued to publish until his death in 1978. In all, 46 titles (with some variant editions) were produced. There are only 13 known complete collections of the press of Achille St. Onge in the world. This is one of them.
All titles published by the Press of Achille St. Onge are exhibited in the Special Collections Department (3rd floor). A catalog entitled Miniature Books Published by Achille J. St. Onge: The Charlotte M. Smith Collection is also available at that location.
Displayed in the Special Collections Department (3rd floor).

COLOPHON: This is a privately published book. H.O. Bullard, NY, set 6 pt on 9 Optima, and it was reduced to 4 pt on 6 (or with 2 pts leading). Optima was designed by Herman Zapf. I pasted up the repros and make the little designs. Then Willis MacDonald Co., Inc., NY, printed the book offset. The paper is Olin's Waylite. This bright opaque sheet adds legibility to small letters. Its acid free composition will prevent these pages from becoming yellow and brittle in a few years. T.C. Woolnough and Son, Ltd., in London bound these sheets by hand with great care and skill. I feel that the best way for a book to be prized and saved is to put it in a good binding. Years later, if the contents have any merit, a few copies will have survived. This is number 182 of 500 copies . Red calf, gold-stamped.
