About Government Collections

Collection Overview

The University of Iowa Libraries' is a depository for U.S. federal, State of Iowa, United Nations, and European Union information. Through depository programs, publications are received from these agencies with the understanding that they will be available for the free use by the public and made accessible in a timely manner. The government publications collection also includes other official government resources and supporting indexes and reference material that enhance research activities. The collection includes subject-specific databases, official reports, statistical resources, legislative information, periodicals, policy analysis, and general information guides in paper, microform, electronic, and digital formats. Recent titles can be located through InfoHawk, the Libraries’ online catalog. Although, historical materials are not widely represented in InfoHawk, they are well indexed through specialized print finding aids.

Most print government resources are located on the third floor of the Main Library (map PDF File), however, the Main Library Reference Collection as well as other libraries on campus may also include government publications in their collections. Non-print government resources are located in the Reference Collection on the first floor of the Main Library.

Librarians with subject specialization are available for reference questions, in-depth research consultation, and classroom instruction.
