2005 Annual Report
Government Documents Round Table
Iowa Library Association

PURPOSE:

The purpose of the Government Documents Round Table is to promote documents library service by providing an avenue for discussion of problems and concerns and for exchange of ideas among librarians working with government publications in all types of libraries.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN 2005:

Eleven library employees attended the GODORT annual summer workshop at the University of Northern Iowa on July 15. The participants learned about new developments in the Iowa and federal documents programs and attended an informational session on the services available through UNI’s Center for Immigrant Leadership and Integration. The workshop concluded with a session about UNI’s repository of Senator Charles Grassley’s papers and other holdings in the UNI archives.

GODORT sponsored a session titled “Moving Forward with Data-Driven Decisions from the Census” at the Fall ILA Conference. The session took place on Friday, October 21 from 11:20-12:10 and featured Beth Henning, the coordinator of the State Library's State Data Center program. Ms. Henning showed participants how to use a variety of information products from the census, including the American Community Survey, to describe local communities and their needs.

The U.S. Census Bureau conducted economic census workshops in Des Moines and Iowa City on November 11 and 12, respectively. The 3-hour, hands-on workshops covered uses of economic census data, the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), economic census products, working with economic census data on the web, and annual business data from the Census Bureau. These free workshops were hosted by the State Library of Iowa's State Data Center program and The University of Iowa Libraries.

The University of Northern Iowa’s Rod Library hosted a training seminar on the State Library of Iowa’s State Data Center’s products and services from 1-4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19, 2005. Beth Henning served as the trainer for the session, which focused on methods for retrieving data from the Center’s web site.

GODORT developed and printed bookmarks that can be distributed at conferences and government information related events to market the Round Table.

GODORT continued publication of its quarterly electronic newsletter, Documents Roundtable News.
