Fifteenth Annual Government Documents Workshop

The fifteenth annual ILA Government Documents Workshop will be held July 21, 2000, at the Parks Library at Iowa State University.  This year’s theme is “Census 2000”.

Matthew Milbrodt, Information Services Specialist at the Kansas City Regional Office of the Census Bureau, will give us an update on Census 2000 and plans for the dissemination of Census data.  We’ll take a look at the Census Bureau’s Web site, see a preview of the data products, and hear about the schedule for their release.   In the afternoon Matthew will demonstration the American FactFinder, the Census Bureau’s online system for providing access to Census data, followed by hands-on lab time.

The day will end with a guided tour of the artwork in Parks Library.

Parking options for all-day visitors to campus:

*The Pay Option*  Park at the Memorial Union for $3.50-$4.00 and enjoy a scenic, roughly 7-minute walk to the Library.

*The Really Free Option*  Park in one of two designated free lots out beyond Stephens Auditorium and take the shuttle bus (also free) which runs every 15 minutes throughout the day.  The bus stops right next to the Library.

Printable maps are on the Web at http://www.fpm.iastate.edu/maps/

Mark your calendars and plan to join us.  The workshop is free for members of ILA/GODORT; the cost is $10.00 for nonmembers and $5.00 for ILA members who join ILA/GODORT at the workshop.  A registration form is attached to this newsletter, for your convenience.  For more information, contact Karen Dole.

Favorite Government Publications Survey

What are your favorite online government publications/web sites?  What publications do you feel would be most valuable to public librarians?  Please send a list of your favorites with the URL and a brief description of each site, what it has to offer, and why you like it to Joy Tofteland at tofteland@ankeny.k12.ia.us.  We’re planning to post a list on the Web site and feature one or two in each issue of the Catalyst and on the iowalib listserv to help promote government information.

GPO PURL Alert – A New Cataloging Tool for Electronic Serials

by Tim Byrne, Government Publications Library, University of Colorado—Boulder

(forwarded from the AUTOCAT e-mail list and edited by Greg Wool)

The GPO PURL Alert – Periodicals Supplement (2000 annual) is available at http://www2.lib.udel.edu/godort/cataloging/alert/.  This file contains the PURLs (Persistent URLs) that GPO has added to the records used to produce the annual Periodicals Supplement to the Monthly Catalog of United States Government Publications.

 Purpose

Until now, libraries using GPO cataloging records, but not receiving updated or corrected versions of previously distributed GPO records through subscription, have not had an easy way to add GPO-assigned PURLs to their catalogs.  To meet this need, the (ALA) GODORT Cataloging Committee offers the GPO PURL Alert.  This service will assist libraries wishing to add PURLs to GPO records already in their catalogs.  Beginning in January 2000, the GPO PURL Alert provides monthly lists of GPO cataloging records which have had PURL information added to the 856 field.  Using GPO PURL Alert lists in electronic format allows libraries to cut and paste the PURLs into their local catalogs.

GPO Cataloging Practice

Current procedure at GPO when assigning a PURL is to move the original URL to the (MARC) 530 or 538 field and put only the PURL and any necessary text in the 856 field.  The URL is placed in the 530 field if the record is for both paper and electronic versions.  The 538 field is used if the record is for an electronic-only title.  Electronic-only titles receive Superintendent of Documents Classification numbers that contain an accession number (e.g., C 61.2:97019096).

Source of Records/Reports

GPO PURL Alert reports are generated from vendor-supplied data, and may not replicate the exact monthly output from GPO as posted in the UPCMOCAT file.  Generally, however, a GPO PURL Alert report for any month will contain data from the preceding month; thus, the January 2000 report primarily offers changes to records made in December 1999.  The information in GPO PURL Alert is extracted from the updated GPO records by searching the University of Colorado at Boulder Libraries’ catalog, Chinook, for the records with “PURL” in the 856 field and “PURL” or “http” in the 530/538 fields.

Array of Data

Each entry in this list contains the Superintendent of Documents classification number, the OCLC number, the GPO depository item number, the title, the text from the 530/538 field which usually ends with “current access is available via PURL” and the information contained in the 856 field.  The records are sorted in depository item number order.

Additional Resources

Libraries who want to identify URLs and PURLs added to records by GPO prior to January 2000 should use either GPO’s “Browse Electronic Titles” (http://www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs/dpos/btitles.html) or the “GPO-MARC Internet Resources” at the Basic Depository Library Documents web site (http://www.du.edu/~ttyler/mirintro.htm#gtr00).  GPO PURL Alert lists are current supplements to these files.  The archive of monthly GPO PURL Alert lists can be found at http://www2.lib.udel.edu/godort/cataloging/alert/.
