Message from the Chair

By Joyce Lindstrom, Iowa State University

Thanks to Marianne Mason (Vice-Chair/Chair Elect) and Barbara Corson (Secretary/Treasurer) for agreeing to serve on the Executive Board for 2002.

Several activities have been planned for this year.  As the Census data is continuing to be released, we have invited Dr. Willis Goudy, Professor of Sociology at ISU, to be our speaker at the 17th annual Documents Workshop on July 12 and Hank Zalatel will be presenting a concurrent session at the ILA Fall Conference.

If you haven't renewed your membership in the Government Documents Roundtable yet, please consider doing so.  Besides receiving the newsletter, you will be able to attend the annual documents workshop for free!

We would appreciate any input that you have concerning issues of interest or concern to documents librarians and users.  This is your Roundtable, and we want to address your needs.  We also welcome your contributions to the newsletter.

Other sessions will be announced shortly.

Please reserve this date and plan on joining us for an informative session.

MINUTES OF THE ILA/GODORT BUSINESS MEETING

October 2001

Minutes

GODORT Annual Meeting

October 12, 2001

15 members in attendance

Joy Tofteland, President, called the meeting to order at 8:00 a.m. Hank Zaletel made a motion that minutes from the last meeting be approved and Mary McInroy seconded.  The motion was unanimously approved.

Joy asked if the delivery of the GODORT newsletter electronically was working all right.  As there were no complaints, it was agreed to continue this practice.

The floor was opened for nominations for officers for 2002.  The results were:

Chair:                        Joyce Lindstrum, ISU

Vice Chair:             Marianne Mason, UofI

Secretary/Treasurer           Barbara Corson, State Library of Iowa

Hank moved that the officers be approved and Carolyn Kohler seconded the motion.  The motion was unanimously approved.

A committee was discussed to revise the State Plan for Federal Documents Depository Libraries in Iowa as per the request made by the Superintendent of Documents.  The State Plan was developed in 1984 and everyone agreed that it is time to revisit it.  The committee will be composed of the following people:

Barbara Corson, State Library of Iowa, Chair

Hank Zaletel, DOT

Joyce Lindstrum, ISU

Mary Mason, UofI

Steve Ostrem, UofI

Edith Ericson, Clinton Public Library

Maeve Clark, Iowa City Public Library

The committee will do most of its work via e-mail.  Carolyn remembered that the last State Plan took about two years to develop.  Barbara Corson asked that the committee also look into revising the State Plan for the State Documents Depository Program.  Everyone agreed to this.

Joy asked if anyone had any suggestions for the 2002 Spring Workshop.  Several topics were discussed including having Willis Goudy, from ISU, and his assistant give a presentation about new data from the 2000 census and having an update on changes with the Federal Documents Depository Library Program. It was also suggested that GODORT sponsor a pre-conference next year at the ILA conference with an Access database workshop.

Joy also asked for volunteers to host the Spring Workshop, but none were forthcoming.

Joy mentioned that a change has been made to the by-laws of ILA and all Roundtables and Forums are now called Subdivisions.  She asked if GODORT should now become GODOS.  Several people said that they preferred to remain GODORT, as that is the acronym for the national organization.  It was unclear whether GODORT would have to change its name and so no action was taken.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 a.m.

Respectfully submitted, Barbara Corson, Secretary/Treasurer.
