WORDS FROM THE CHAIR:
WE’VE DONE
IT!
The Iowa State Plan for
Federal Depository Libraries has been unanimously approved! The Plan’s mission is to affirm common
goals, objectives, and responsibilities of all federal depository libraries in
the State to ensure that residents of Iowa have free and open access to federal
government information. Thanks to
all who have been involved in the 2003 revision.
The signed Agreements are on file with Carolyn Kohler, the regional librarian at The University of Iowa Libraries. A copy of the Plan has been forwarded to the Superintendent of Documents at the Government Printing Office with the list of signatories. The Regional Library's web site will post the 2003 Iowa State Plan for Federal Depository Libraries along with links to those of other states at http://www.lib.uiowa.edu/govpubs/. The Iowa Plan will be posted on the Iowa GODORT web site as well at http://www.public.iastate.edu/~lindstro/ilagodort_home.htm.

Carolyn Kohler, Head of the
Government Publications Department at the University of Iowa, will be awarded
the James Bennett Childs award during the American Library Association/Canadian
Library Association joint conference in Toronto. The Childs
Award is a tribute to an individual who has made a lifetime and significant
contribution to the field of government documents librarianship. Carolyn's contributions to government
documents librarianship span over 30 years. She joined the University of Iowa
staff in 1968 as state, foreign, and international documents librarian. In just
three years she was promoted to department head and has served in that capacity
and as regional depository librarian ever since.
On the state-wide level,
Carolyn was instrumental in establishing the Iowa Library Association's
Government Documents Roundtable (ILA/GODORT) section and served as its first
Chair in 1973-74. She chaired the Committee to Draft an Iowa State Depository
Law from 1973-78 and played a pivotal role in the final passage of that law in
1978. In addition, she was a member of the Iowa State Library Depository
Documents Advisory Council from 1976-1986 and served on a State Library Task
Force to Study the Future of the State Documents Depository Program in 1997-98.
She chaired the committee on the Iowa State Plan (for the Federal Depository
Library Program) in 1983-84, and is currently working with the committee charged
with updating the plan.
Carolyn takes her regional
librarian duties very seriously.
Carolyn communicates electronically with Iowa’s selective depositories
via Govdoc-Iowa, a listserv set up several years ago at Carolyn's behest and
hosted by the University of Iowa.
Information on the listserv and other “Resources of Use to Federal
Depository Libraries in Iowa” are on the Government Publications Department
(GPD) web page at http://www.lib.uiowa.edu/govpubs/docslib.html. Carolyn is also a frequent presenter at
ILA/GODORT workshops and ILA fall conference sessions. Her strong stance on maintaining access
for our non-university patrons comes through loud and clear in all discussions
concerning “non-primary clientele.”
Carolyn will be retiring in
2004, and although she deserves a rest, we in the Iowa documents community will
certainly miss her knowledge base, dedication, and effectiveness. Congratulations and best wishes,
Carolyn.

FIRST
IMPRESSIONS
This April I attended the
Federal Depository Library Conference for the first time. During my three years
as a documents librarian I have always been able to find an excuse not to
attend: the conference is too expensive and far away; the conference deals
mainly with Depository Council matters that don’t pertain to me; I have too much
going on at work and the conference proceedings will be summarized in the
Administrative Notes anyway; and the list goes on.
This year I put the excuses
aside and attended the spring conference in Reno and am very glad that I did.
The conference not only gave me a chance to hear about new developments at GPO
and within the FDLP, but also enabled me to ask GPO staff questions I have
regarding these developments and other depository issues. It introduced me to
our new Public Printer and Superintendent of Documents and provided the
opportunity to give them input as they develop plans for the future of GPO. I
also met documents colleagues from around the country and discussed with them
innovations and common concerns. I found that I am not alone in being a
librarian who juggles depository duties along with duties as a bibliographer,
reference librarian, instruction librarian, etc.
I also had the opportunity to
attend several educational sessions presented by documents colleagues. These
informed me about pilot projects, site visits, and new products available to
assist in developing documents presentations for outreach purposes. I returned
from the conference feeling energized and excited to improve my daily work as a
documents librarian. Now that I have plenty of ideas I just need to find the
time!
Since I have seen first hand what a valuable experience the conference can be, I definitely plan to attend again in the future. For anyone who has trouble getting to D.C. for the fall conference, keep in mind that the spring 2004 conference will be held in St. Louis, MO. Hope to see you all there!
