Introducing the Candidates and Chair for the 2004 Term (by
the lame-duck Chair)
Only a few months before the new year and a new team of GODORT leaders take office. The election will take place at the Business Meeting and Breakfast at the ILA Conference on Friday, October 17th, bright and early at 7:30 a.m. Only those in attendance may vote. The breakfasts are generally quite good and worth rising early.
Thank you to the candidates for their willingness to be
nominated and serve if elected.
Since we are a fairly small organization it is difficult to
find two candidates to run for each office. However, if you are interested in
running please make your intentions known and your name will be included in the
election.
Also, I hope that you will give consideration to serving as a GODORT officer in the future. None of these positions are burdensome and you may call upon past officers for advice at any time. Rah, rah!

REACHING OUT
Hi. My name is Brett Cloyd. I recently began my job as the State, Foreign and International Documents Librarian at the University of Iowa Libraries. I met some of you at the summer GODORT workshop at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library, and look forward to meeting more of you at the October ILA Fall Conference.
One issue that we have been working on at our library is outreach. How do we let the populations we serve know about our collections? We know we have interesting and useful information. Often, that gets missed by those in our institution and the larger communities we serve. To that end, I am sharing a list of ideas that we are working on here at the University of Iowa. If you have additional ideas or success stories, we would love to hear them.
* Bookmarks: we have prepared new bookmarks that we
are considering
giving to people when they check out government
publications.
* Pencils: we are planning to order pencils
with the department web
site address to give to our patrons and at special
events.
* Hand-outs: we revised our hand-outs to make them
up-to-date and easy
to read.
* Brochure Rack: we set up
a brochure rack outside the Department's
front door. We filled it with our
new hand-outs and some freebies from GPO
and the State of
Iowa.
* Signage: we created a new sign to let people know
that we are a great
source for US Federal, State of Iowa, European Union and
United Nations
publications. In addition, we placed new US depository decals
and a
well-sized Depository sign from GPO on the front door.
* Exhibits: we are borrowing an exhibit on Herbert Hoover from
the
Presidential Library and plan to accompany it with materials from
the
collection.
* On the road: we have been thinking
about county and state fairs as a
place to tell people about the Libraries
services and collections. We are
also keeping an eye out for city and
university events to promote
collections and services.
* At home: liaison with faculty and departments. We are working
with
faculty members to provide students an overview and instruction on
using
government publications in their research and class
assignments.
* The web: we plan to create a section on the
web site geared to the
general public
* The Federal
Depository Library Program has a web page for Promoting
Depository
Collections and Services. Have a look:

Do you have any other ideas?
Bring them to the ILA/GODORT breakfast.

LEARNING TO USE GPO ACCESS: AN IN-DEPTH
WORKSHOP
The Government Publications Department at the University of
Iowa Libraries is pleased to sponsor a full day of hands-on GPO Access
training Wednesday, October 15 from 9:30 to 5:30 in the Main Library’s
Information Arcade.
The cost of the workshop is $15.00, although the fee will be
waived for librarians and staff members from Federal Depository Libraries in
Iowa. Workstation space is limited
to 24 participants.
The training team will be Matt Landgraf and Kelly M.
Lillibridge, Electronic Products and Services Specialists from the U.S.
Government Printing Office in Washington, D.C. Ample training materials will be
provided at the workshop.
If you haven’t used this award-winning database lately, it
has a new look and has been reorganized with an eye toward its varied
users.
If you are a new to this database, GPO Access is the
single source where third graders can learn how laws are made; where junior high
students can learn about the election process; where college students can
develop research skills using primary sources; where the business community can
find regulations affecting commerce; where everyone can find a wealth of
information produced by the U.S. federal government. It’s the citizen’s database!
For a sample agenda go to: http://www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs/fdlp/tools/gatrain.html
Note: Lunch and breaks will be on your own. U.I. is near many great
restaurants!

TWO GODORT PROGRAMS
AT ILA
GODORT is sponsoring two winning programs at the upcoming
Iowa Library Association Conference in Cedar Rapids that should have broad
appeal to all types of librarians.
The first program, “Finding Government Information on the
Web: Using GPO Access”, will take place on Thursday, October 16th at
2:00. The session will be repeated at 3:30. Two specialists from the Government
Printing Office will demonstrate the new “look and feel” of the GPO Access
database in this 50 minute session. The database has recently been reorganized
to appeal to users of all ages.
Sorry, no hands-on training during ILA. If you’re looking for serious training,
register for the University of Iowa workshop on October
15th.
The second program will focus on genealogical resources
available from the National Archives and Records Administration and is jointly
sponsored with the Local History and Genealogy Subdivision. The speaker, Marilyn Finke from NARA,
Central Plains Region Office has presented at a number of Iowa Genealogical
Society annual conferences, held yearly in Marshalltown, plus numerous
genealogical, historical, lineage and various other groups across Iowa,
Missouri and Kansas over the past ten or so years.
