Please pass the GODORT Newsletter along! If there are employees in your library who are not members of ILA/GODORT, especially support staff, who work with government documents and would be interested in this information, please share it with them. Thanks!

Words from the Chair

According to the bylaws, GODORT's mission is to “promote documents library service by providing an avenue for discussion of problems and concerns and an exchange of ideas among librarians working with government publications in all types of libraries.”

To accomplish this goal, the 2004 Executive Board has a number of activities planned:

I'm looking forward to working with the other members of the Executive Board, Becky Lutkenhaus and Brett Cloyd, and many of the GODORT regulars on these projects this year.

GODORT 2004 Annual Summer Workshop

Wear comfortable shoes and casual clothes to the July 9 th , 2004 Iowa GODORT Summer Workshop.

During the workshop we will conduct a walking tour of the capitol area as we discover the many government document resources available in Des Moines . Places we'll see are the beautiful State Law Library, housed in the State Capitol building; the State Historical Society's library; the Genealogical Society's library; and we'll have a tour of the State Library's newly renovated building. Although we will be walking, the buildings are all within 2 ½ blocks of each other.

In the Law Library, we'll hear several speakers from the Legislative Services Bureau discuss legislative documents and new ways to access them. Speakers at the Historical Society will tell us about their resources and we'll be able to compare those with the resources of the Genealogical Society, which are complementary. At the State Library we'll have a demonstration of the new Documents Depository Program's electronic archive, Iowa Publications Online (see information about IPO below). We'll finish the day with a brief business meeting.

Mark July 9 th in your calendars and look for registration information in early June.

A Network of Information Resources at Your Fingertips

Since March 1, 2004 , TransCat, a new online catalog of transportation-related resources, has provided Iowa 's transportation community access to a gold mine of training and information materials.

Here's what is available with only a few clicks of a computer mouse:

The TransCat service was initiated by a consortium of state agency and university transportation libraries—the Midwest Transportation Knowledge Network (MTKN). TransCat is supported with funds from the National Transportation Library.

ILA GODORT Web News

On the web front, there are two pieces of news to share. First, the ILA GODORT web site has a new URL: http://www.lib.uiowa.edu/govpubs/ilagodort/ . The site is up-to-date with the most recent newsletter and Annual Report. If you have suggestions or comments, please do let me know.

Second, I have been working with the documents librarians at my institution on a re-design and re-organization of the “Documents Librarianship” page. This page brings together useful information for librarians and library staff who work with government documents. In one convenient place you will be able to find a selection of list-servs, documents organizations and depository programs, as well as links to materials that may be of use for the federal depository libraries in the state of Iowa . Visit the page at: http://www.lib.uiowa.edu/govpubs/docslib/ .

Iowa Publications Online

The State Library's Documents Depository Program has been archiving electronic state documents for several years in the Iowa Electronic State Documents Repository http://www.infoiowa.state.ia.us/reports/ . Information on that site has been moved to a new site, and the Repository will soon be closed down.

Iowa Publications Online http://publications.iowa.gov/ is a service of the State Library of Iowa and the State of Iowa Information Technology Enterprise . IPO is an electronic depository for documents intended for the general public and produced by Iowa state agencies. This service allows Iowans and others to have electronic state documents at their fingertips.

The new site has several advantages over the old site. IPO uses software that is intended for archiving documents. It gives the State Library staff control over the metadata attached to each document and offers much better search capabilities. While IPO is still under construction and only a test group is able to deposit documents, there are already more than 900 state documents available through the site which can be searched by the public. Many of these documents are published only in electronic format. Reports, newsletters and many other types of state documents are permanently archived in a centralized location. Visitors may browse, download, or print copies as needed.

The State Library plays a key role in ensuring that all state documents are not only readily available to those who are interested today, but will be available for scholars and researchers in the future. IPO is a link to enhancing access to state documents.
