DOCUMENTS ROUNDTABLE NEWS
Number 68, December 2004
Contents
It has been such a pleasure working with the GODORT Executive Board this year. Both Becky Lutkenhaus, Vice-Chair/Chair Elect, and Brett Cloyd, Secretary/Treasurer have been enthusiastic and have contributed tremendously to the process.
I am sure that next year for GODORT will be very successful. Several activities and improvements are planned. At the Annual Meeting we discussed ways to increase membership in GODORT and attendance at future meetings.
The establishment of a grant for a GODORT member to attend the Federal Depository Library Program's Fall Depository Library Conference should be an incentive for documents librarians who have been interested in attending but have not had the funds. We also are trying to find a different time for the Annual Meeting at the ILA Conference than the Friday morning breakfast meetings, to make it easier for more to attend. We realize that $10 for the breakfast might be a significant barrier for some.
If you have any suggestions for how else we might make a GODORT membership and/or your attendance at the Annual Meeting more attractive, please let me know.
- Barbara Corson, Chair

Iowa Publications Online to Include Regents Institutions’ Documents
Iowa Publications Online http://publications.iowa.gov now has over 1700 electronic state documents included in its archive. Currently the documents are from all state agencies. The State Library is in the processes of including electronic documents produced by Iowa State University, the University of Iowa, and the University of Northern Iowa in the archive. This process will take many months since the volume of documents is very large. IPO staff will work with documents staff at these three institutions to locate e-documents and their publishers and to encourage them to archive their e-documents in IPO.
In addition, IPO has begun to add documents created in CD-ROM format to ensure permanent access. Although experts do not agree on the life expectancy of a CD-ROM, Scientific American.com says, "Practically speaking, the most likely wear-out mechanism for CD-ROMs will be the changing technology of data storage. Long before the disc itself becomes unreadable, it is likely that the CD-ROM will be replaced by a new medium and that it will not be possible to find a CD-ROM reader, except perhaps in a museum. ”
State Library Staff Catalogs Pre-Depository Items
The Documents Department staff at the State Library has begun processing a backlog of pre-1979 state documents. The State Library was named the Documents Depository in 1979, but prior to that time some documents had been collected already. Some of these older documents already have records in FirstSearch, but many are getting new cataloging records and will be available to researchers for the first time. To find the cataloging records for these older state documents, some going back to the 1870’s, check FirstSearch or the State Library’s catalog at http://www.silo.lib.ia.us/.
