Words from the Chair

It is my pleasure to be serving as GODORT chair this year. I am excited to have the opportunity to work with all of you in accomplishing common goals and strengthening our organization. Among the events we have planned for the year are training from the Iowa State Data Center, the annual summer workshop, and an ILA Fall Conference program featuring Viviane Launay from UNESCO.

I am also pleased to report that the GODORT bylaws have been amended to create an Awards Committee, which is being chaired by former GODORT chairperson Barb Corson. This committee will be developing guidelines for a cash award that will be used to help a member of GODORT defray the expenses of attending a Federal Depository Library Conference.

If you have recommendations or questions regarding GODORT throughout the year please contact me or one of the other members of the Executive Board. We welcome your input!

Iowa State Data Center Training Sessions

The University of Northern Iowa’s Rod Library will be hosting a training seminar on the Iowa State Data Center’s products and services from 1-4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19, 2005. Beth Henning from the State Data Center will be the trainer for the session and will focus on how to retrieve data from the Center’s web site. There is no fee for attending the training session but all participants must register in advance by filling out the electronic form available at http://www.uni.edu/lutkenha/training/registration.html.

GODORT 2005 Annual Summer Workshop

The University of Northern Iowa will be hosting this year’s Iowa GODORT Annual Summer Workshop on Friday, July 15. The day’s activities will include updates on both the state of Iowa and Federal Depository Library programs, a talk by UNI Archivist Gerry Peterson about the Papers of Charles Grassley found within the UNI collection, and a presentation by Dr. Mark Grey, the Director of the Iowa Center for Immigrant Leadership and Integration (formerly the New Iowans Program). The Center provides great services for Iowa communities, so come and learn about the Center and how it may be able to help the residents of your local area!

Additional details and registration information will appear in the June issue of Documents Roundtable News and will be distributed through the GOVDOC-IOWA discussion list.

Survey for Essential Titles…or Only Titles

The “Essential Titles Survey” has created a great deal of angst, excitement and apprehension in the UI libraries, on listservs, and among many federal documents librarians nationwide in light of the well publicized, yet unofficial proposal made by Judy Russell at the ALA Mid-Winter Conference. The proposal, in short, states that GPO’s budget request for the next fiscal year would reflect the intention of limiting tangible distribution of FDLP material to the Essential Titles http://www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs/fdlp/pubs/estitles.html by October 2005.

The purpose of the Survey to Identify Essential Titles for Public Use in Paper or Other Tangible Format received on Monday, March 07, 2005 is to identify titles that are most effectively used in paper/fiche/CD-ROM format to access government information. With limited budget requests expected from GPO, the final list could possibly represent the only tangible publications distributed through the depository program in the future.

Your participation is of the utmost importance. A low participation rate could invalidate, in GPO’s eyes, the validity of all respondents. Be sure to read the introductory portion of The Survey, It contains important information that should serve as cautionary notes for us all. The survey may be found at http://www.gpoaccess.gov/essential/

Please note that March 18th is the final day to submit the survey.

15 Iowa Road Trips

I’m happy to say that the regional librarian will be on the road again visiting selective depository libraries in Iowa. The purpose of these visits will be to provide support, training if needed, and to learn from the fifteen FDLP libraries. It is my goal to visit each library during 2005 to learn about unique issues and to discuss common challenges that we all face in the Federal Depository Library Program.

In the near future I plan to send a more formal letter to Documents Librarians and their directors regarding the planned visits that I hope will increase communication and provide mutual support among all Iowa depository libraries.
