Words from the Chair

It has been a pleasure to serve as GODORT Chair over the past year. We succeeded in bringing information to the Iowa documents community and are busy planning for next year. Iowa City will be the site of the 2006 Annual Summer Workshop on July 14. GODORT also plans to award its first ever grant to help a member defray the expenses of attending the Fall Depository Library Conference in Washington, D.C. (see information below). Remember that we want to develop educational opportunities that serve your needs, so let us know if there are government information related topics you’d like to learn more about.

I encourage all of you to be active members in the coming year. Spread the word that GODORT isn’t only for depositories or libraries with paper documents in their collections. It is for anyone who is interested in, organizes, facilitates access to, or uses government information regardless of format. With the shift to the electronic distribution of government information this catches a large number of us!

The Federal Depository Conference Award

The Federal Depository Library Conference Award was created to support continuing education in documents librarianship and to promote greater understanding of current Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) issues. These meetings offer a great opportunity to learn more about government information issues.

The recipient will be given an award to use towards the cost of attending either the Spring or Fall FDL Conference of the year in which it is awarded. The GODORT Executive Board will determine the amount based on the budget for that year. The recommended award amount is between $350-$500.

The award will be given bi-annually to a member of Iowa GODORT. To find out more and to apply on-line go to the GODORT website at http://www.lib.uiowa.edu/govpubs/ilagodort/fdlc/index.html

We would like to make an award for use in 2006. Deadline: December 30, 2005

2005 Fall Federal Depository Library Council Meeting and Conference

With the Federal Depository Library Council Meeting and Conference a month past, as an attendee I’ve had time to mull over the discussions that took place. This is the first conference in my memory that was planned and organized by the Council (librarians) rather than by GPO. Most notably, the significant focus of discussions was the “Vision” document that was also drafted by Council http://www.gpo.gov/su_docs/fdlp/pubs/dlc_vision_09_02_2005.pdf In a nutshell the document asks what the future holds for libraries in the Web-based world of government information. The document “suggests new and reinvigorated roles for Federal depository libraries.”

The conference was structured around topic-based discussion groups covering:

My simplified intrepretation of both the document and the conference is that responsibility of effectively managing the web envirionment and creatively delivering government information lies each of us with or without a depository program.
