Message from the Chair: Review of GODORT Summer Workshop

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend and participate in the GODORT Summer Workshop which was held July 14, 2006 in Iowa City at the University of Iowa’s Main Library. The workshop attracted 23 participants and featured presentations from informative speakers who demonstrated government information sources that can be used in public service roles of all kinds of libraries.

The GODORT business meeting (more at Business Meeting minutes) after our delicious lunch offered a good chance to talk about future GODORT activities, ways to attract new members, and planning discussions related to the fall ILA conference in Council Bluffs (more below in GODORT at the ILA Annual Conference).

I compiled a list of links and resources discussed at the workshop for your review and these may also be of interest to those of you unable to attend the workshop:

There was also a good deal of interest in Sweet Pea Catering who provided tasty sandwiches, pastries, and salads. Sweet Pea is based in Iowa City and can be reached at 319-351-7642.

GODORT at the ILA Annual Conference October 11-13, 2006, Council Bluffs, Iowa

GODORT Booth:

For the first time (at least in recent memory), GODORT will have a booth in the Exhibit Hall. We will have information on membership as well as (I hope) promotional materials highlighting government information sources. Two opportunities for GODORT members: 1) If you have any promotional materials you would like included in the booth, please forward to me by Monday, October 9th. 2) While we do not need to staff the booth, it would be nice to have friendly faces there. Exhibits will be open from 3:30 – 6:30 on Wednesday and most of the day Thursday. Either drop by or let me know if you'd like to schedule some time in the booth.

GODORT Sponsored Session:

On Thursday, October 12th, GODORT will be sponsoring the session HOW TO USE THE IOWA CODE AND THE IOWA ADMINISTRATIVE CODE ON THE INTERNET.  Mandy Easter who is a Librarian at the State Law Library in Des Moines will be presenting. Here’s the introduction:

Can’t afford to buy the eight-volume set of the Iowa Code every year?  What about the annual Iowa Acts or the 30-volume set of state regulations known as the Iowa Administrative Code?  How do you tell which state laws have been changed at the end of an Iowa legislative session?  Do you have to subscribe to the List of Code Sections Affected?  All of these expensive documents are available absolutely free on the Internet!  Learn how to navigate and manipulate the online versions of these valuable reference tools that your customers want and need.  Don’t panic the next time you’re asked a question about the law—find out where our laws come from, how to locate them in various stages of the process, how to help your customers find them and how to retrieve them from this handy Web site!

GODORT Breakfast:

The GODORT breakfast will be at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, October 13th.  We will enjoy food and conversation, and hold our business meeting. Among agenda items will be election of 2007 officers. Be sure to sign up for the breakfast on your conference registration form. Please try to bring 2 friends to the breakfast.

The Federal Depository Conference Award

Note: this announcement was featured in an earlier edition of the newsletter. I would like to encourage people to apply for this award. - Brett Cloyd, GODORT Chair.

The Federal Depository Library Conference Award was created to support continuing education in documents librarianship and to promote greater understanding of current Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) issues. These meetings offer a great opportunity to learn more about government information issues.

The recipient will be given an award to use towards the cost of attending either the Spring or Fall FDL Conference of the year in which it is awarded. The GODORT Executive Board will determine the amount based on the budget for that year. The recommended award amount is between $350-$500.

The award will be given bi-annually to a member of Iowa GODORT. To find out more and to apply on-line go to the GODORT website at http://www.lib.uiowa.edu/govpubs/ilagodort/fdlc/index.html

We would like to make an award for use in 2007. Deadline: December 30, 2006
