Iowa State Publications provides a list of all official publications from the territory and the state of Iowa, 1838-1936. It does not include publications from institutions which would later become the University of Iowa, Iowa State University, and the University of Northern Iowa.
Ms. Stewart visited various libraries in Iowa while she was a student at the University of Illinois. The cited publications are a comprehensive list of those she found in the various libraries and does not represent the collection of one particular library. Still, researchers and the staff in Government Publications frequently use this guide, and many of the cited publications are held at the University of Iowa Libraries.
Iowa State Publications includes helpful information that describes various state agencies and their publications, as well as a thorough history of the issues relating to the printing of official publications in the territory and the state of Iowa. . Page 25 of this title includes a description of how the documents are organized. Generally, the first part is organized by publication year, while the second part is organized by Agency name.
In the center of the volume there is a valuable index to the state’s “Legislative Documents,” 1856-1931. The Legislative Documents series (Gov Pubs stacks, 353.9777 I6.4) compiled annual reports from state agencies. Each year, there were many volumes published and the reports of a particular agency may have been published irregularly. The index lists many of the agencies and tells the researcher where he or she can find a copy of a particular year’s report. Many of these reports can also be found elsewhere, published as separate pieces.
