The symbol of an eagle encircling an open book with its outstretched wing appears at the entrance of each library designated as a Federal Depository Library. The University of Iowa was designated a depository for federal government publications in 1884 and has held special status as a Regional Library within the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) since 1969. Through the depository program, publications produced by federal agencies and distributed to libraries by the Government Printing Office are received with the understanding that they will be made available to the public in a free and open manner. As the Regional Library for the State of Iowa, UI Libraries serves all citizens of Iowa, maintains the historical collection of record for the State of Iowa, and provides administrative support for other depository libraries within the state.
The UI Libraries’ federal collection is the most extensive in the State of Iowa and includes publications in paper, microformat, CD-ROM and DVD with access to a growing number Web-based resources (New Electronic Titles). Publication types include consumer guides, official reports, statistical publications, technical reports, legislative information with supporting secondary material such as periodicals, policy analysis publications, and general information handbooks.
Most government resources are available in the government information collection on the third floor of the Main Library. Reference publications, microfiche,CD-ROMs and DVDs are located in the Main Library Reference Collection on the first floor. map
A large percentage of the publications in the federal collection may be borrowed either through the standard circulation procedures or through Interlibrary Loan.
