Troubleshooting Guide

PROBLEM: Importing doesn’t work at all, or the data parses into the wrong fields.
SOLUTION: Your import filter needs updating – check http://www.endnote.com/support/enfilters.asp for new filters.
(NOTE – sometimes there can be a lag of weeks or months between a database change and the filter update).

PROBLEM: The Cite While You Write (CWYW) toolbar and menu don’t appear in Microsoft Word.
SOLUTION: To see the CWYW options, install Word CWYW start-up files. See the Official EndNote FAQ for more details.

PROBLEM: Your output style of choice isn’t in EndNote.
SOLUTION: First, check http://www.endnote.com/support/enstyles.asp to see if a style is available. If no, then locate the author instructions for the journal and see if a recommendation is given. If no, then locate a similar style and edit in Style Manager (see slides 20-28 of the Extreme EndNote tutorial for details).

PROBLEM: Citation numbering in MS Word has become erratic or output style is inconsistent.
SOLUTION: Connections have been broken by manually altering references within Word (instead of using Edit Citations). MS Word’s Track Changes functionality can also do this. Try reformatting first, but you may have to delete and reinsert all of the citations.

PROBLEM: EndNote crashes almost immediately.
SOLUTION: Version 8 and Windows XP Service Pack 2 are incompatible – upgrade to 8.0.2. In EndNote's Help menu, choose EndNote Program Updates.

PROBLEM: EndNote isn't working with the University of Iowa thesis/dissertation template.
SOLUTION: Disable Instant Formatting in the individual files, then use the Master Document feature in Word to format the entire document simultaneously (see slides 29-32 of the Extreme EndNote tutorial for details).

PROBLEM: Journals titles are abbreviated when they should be spelled out (or vice versa).
SOLUTION: Install a term list to convert journal titles (see slides 14-16 of the Extreme EndNote tutorial for details).

PROBLEM: When I try to use any of the EndNote tools in Word, nothing happens.
SOLUTION: Uninstall the conflicting plugin - see http://www.endnote.com/support/faqs/CWYW/faq11.asp for instructions.
