EndNote / Ovid Import Instructions

The information below was last updated January 11, 2007.

Importing your citations into EndNote can be done in the following three ways all of which are discussed in this handout:

Using the Direct Export option in Ovid [recommended]

EndNote Ovid

Search the Ovid Databases using EndNote [not recommended]

EndNote includes a special client interface which allows users to connect to remote databases which comply with the Z39.50 standard, a protocol which is widely supported by database providers and libraries. The OVID search software can be searched in this manner and the information below is designed to help you do so.

First, however, a very important warning:
The OVID search interface was chosen because of the way it interfaces with health related databases. If you use EndNote to access Ovid, this interface will NOT be available to you (including explosions, sub-headings, and limit parameters). Consequently, you may lose a significant number of relevant citations or end up with a great many non-relevant ones. For this reason, the Hardin Library recommends that if you are performing a subject search, you use the regular OVID-based search software for your search and then use the Direct Export or Importing options described above.

To edit the connection files* in EndNote, go to the Edit menu, select “Connection Files” then “Open ConnectionManager”. Select desired database then click EDIT. Click the second option “Connection Settings” and fill in the information using the connection settings below.
