Technical Support

Still having problems connecting to an e-journal or database?
Please use the Techical Support Request Form to report a problem with an electronic resource or call Janna Lawrence at 335-9870. Try to be as specific as you can in describing your problem, including the journal title or publisher if you know it.

How do I know what journal titles are available electronically?

Use the UI Libraries' Alphabetical List of Electronic Journals to see if a title is available electronically. This list includes titles that the library subscribes to individually or as part of a package and also titles that are available at no charge to anyone.

Click here to see Resources Under Evaluation at the University of Iowa Libraries.

How do I know what issues or years are available in a e-journal?

The availability dates for an e-journal are displayed in the InfoLink window that pops up when you click on the InfoLink button from the Alphabetical List of Electronic Journals or from University Libraries online catalog InfoHawk. See examples described below in "What is the InfoLink Button?"

What is the InfoLink Button? infolink

InfoLink allows you to see if a journal (or article) is available in full-text, as well as several other things. It is important to look at the Availability dates that appear in the InfoLink pop-up window to make sure that full-text is offered for the publication date of your article. Useful notes appear there as well.

The example below shows that there are three different ways to access this journal, but notice that the availability dates are different for each resource. If you are looking for the most recent issue, you should use Synergy Blackwell link.

Full text available via Academic Search Elite Availability: from 1998
Availability: Most recent 1 year not available

Full text available via EBSCO Health Source Nursing/Academic Edition Availability: from 1998
Availability: Most recent 1 year not available

Full text available via Synergy Blackwell S_T_M Availability: from 1996 volume 103 issue 1

This example shows you that the note in red means that you can only use this resource from an on-campus computer:

Full text available via Highwire (on campus only) Availability: from 1999 volume 59 issue 1 Note: Because of license restrictions, this title is not available off campus.

For more information about InfoLink, go to the InfoLink FAQ page.

How do I access e-journals from off-campus?

You MUST start from a UI Libraries webpage to be validated through the proxy server. It is best to start from either Hardin Library's home page or the University of Iowa Libraries Alphabetical List of Electronic Journals.

The University of Iowa Libraries' Proxy Server provides students and faculty of the University of Iowa with free global access to thousands of electronic resources for scholarly research. The system allows students and faculty working off-campus to electronically access periodical and index databases and full-text resources.

When accessing a restricted resource from off-campus, you will automatically be prompted to enter your Hawk ID & Password, at which point you will have full access to that resource.

Please visit the UI Libraries' Off-Campus Access page for more information.

Why do I get a "Subscription Expired" note when I try to access the article I want?

If you get a "Subscription Expired" note when you try to access an article be sure to double-check the "Availability" dates for the title. It could be that you are trying to access an article that is outside of the dates for which we have subscribed.

If you are off-campus, a "Subscription Expired" note may appear if you have not authenticated through the proxy server. "Bookmarking" your favorite journals from an off-campus computer will create this problem. Try again to get to the journal starting from the University of Iowa Libraries Alphabetical List of Electronic Journals. If you still get the note after you try this then please report it to us using the Techical Support Request Form because we may need to contact the publisher.

Why do some journals link to a search screen and not directly to the title?

It depends on how a publisher chooses to provide electronic access to their journals. If they only offer full-text access via an an aggregator company (MD Consult, Health Reference Center, Ovid, etc.) then you are presented with a search screen.

Click on the links below for instructions on searching specific databases for full-text:

Why doesn't the library have access to <name your journal>?

Hardin Library is committed to providing access to electronic journals and resources in order to support curricular, clinical, and research needs. However, occasionally there are titles for which the pricing, licensing terms, or technical issues are not feasible or acceptable.

We fully recognize the importance of these titles and, along with other academic libraries, lobby publishers to develop pricing and licensing terms that we can support. Titles that we have not been able to acquire are reviewed regularly and reconsidered when the problem issue(s) has been changed. For further information about these or other electronic titles, please contact please contact Janna Lawrence at janna-lawrence@uiowa.edu or 319-335-9870.
