III. WEB RESOURCES

NOTE: Most survey and test instruments must
be purchased directly from the publisher.

I. DATABASES

HAPI, PSYCINFO & Mental Measurements Yearbook are available through Ovid (http://www.lib.uiowa.edu/ovid). CINAHL is available through EBSCOhost.

A. HAPI (Health and Psychosocial Instruments)

The HAPI database provides information about research and survey instruments, such as questionnaires, checklists, rating scales, and interview forms. It also contains journal articles and book chapters on selected instruments.
Topics covered include public health, communication, psychology, nursing, organizational behavior, medicine, sociology, physical education, psychiatry, human resources, gerontology and dental medicine.
HAPI relies on official subject headings from MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) and the Thesaurus of Psychological Terms. The database is updated quarterly and while emphasizing more recent instruments, includes instruments dating back to 1924.

Tips for Searching HAPI
HAPI indexes instruments using the full-title of the instrument. At the Enter Keyword or phrase prompt type the name of the instrument:

child behavior checklist

A subject search (above) will search for the word/phrase in the Instrument Title (ti), Subject Descriptor (de), Acronym (ac), and Abstract (ab) fields.

Searching can also be done on the following fields: Instrument Title (ti), Instrument
Author (au), Journal or Book Source (so), Abstract (ab), Subject Descriptors (de), References (rf), Reliability (ry), Validity (va), and Subscale Titles (st). Use the qualifier .af. to search all fields:

cbcl.af.

Click on the “more fields” button for additional fields.

B. CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature)

The CINAHL database, in addition to indexing the nursing literature, contains both descriptions of selected research instruments and articles about instruments and related research methodologies.

CINAHL'S Research Instrument Project

The CINAHL Research Instrument Project provides access to research instrument descriptions in the CINAHL database. Instrument descriptions include year developed, purpose, variables of interest, original population, question format, administration, scoring, psychometrics, instructions on how to obtain for use, copyright owner, and modifications. Some instruments include the full-text of the instrument itself.

Instrument descriptions are being added all the time. The following search strategy will retrieve a current list of instrument descriptions:

In CINAHL (EBSCOhost):
In the Find: box enter research instrument; In the drop-down box select PT Publication Type

The following is a list of instruments that have descriptions in the database; many of which include the full text of the instrument.

Tips for Searching the Instrumentation Literature in CINAHL

SUBJECT HEADINGS: CINAHL contains subject headings for instruments by type (e.g. surveys, scales, questionnaires, interviews, etc.), instruments by name (e.g. McGill Pain Questionnaire), and headings related to assessment and measurement (e.g. clinical assessment tools, functional assessment, pain measurement). To locate relevant subject headings for your topic select the CINAHL Headings or Indexes buttons.

CINAHL (EBSCOhost) Example:

ebsco

Remember to read the scope note for the beginning date of the subject heading. Since many of the instruments by name are relatively new subject headings, you should also do a text word search on the instrument name to retrieve articles or instrument descriptions that were already in the database before the beginning date of the subject heading term.

INSTRUMENTATION FIELD: The Instrumentation Field (IN) includes the names of instruments used in research studies indexed in CINAHL. This field was added to the database in 1991.

Select the Indexes button. Select Instrumentation from the Browse an Index drop-down and enter a keyword or phrase..
ebsco
Or, from the Advanced search page:

ebsco

PUBLICATION TYPES: You can limit your results to Research Instrument (back to 1994) or Questionnaire/Scale (back to1983). Select the Refine Search tab and scroll down to Publication Type.

C. PsycINFO

The PsycINFO database covers the professional and academic literature in psychology and related disciplines including medicine, psychiatry, nursing, sociology, education, pharmacology, physiology, linguistics, and other areas. Coverage is worldwide, and includes references and abstracts to over 1500 journals and dissertations in more than 30 languages, and to book chapters and books in the English language. Over 60,000 references are added annually.

Tips for Searching the Instrumentation Literature in PsycINFO
To search for questionnaires use terms such as "questionnaires", "measurement", "rating scales", "psychological assessment", "attitude measures", "interviews", "educational measurement", etc. Or, at the Enter Keyword or phrase prompt type the name of the instrument. Deselect "Map Term to Subject Heading".

D. Mental Measurements Yearbook

The Mental Measurements Yearbook contains information about, and reviews of, English-language standardized tests covering education skills, personality, vocational aptitude, psychology etc. The database covers the ninth through the fifteenth yearbooks (thirteenth and fourteenth yearbooks are also available in print- see section II, print resources). Entries in the database contain information on: test authors, test purpose, publisher, scoring, full overview of the test, description of the test materials and reviews of the test.

Tips for searching the Mental Measurements Yearbook Default keyword search included reviewer (rv), title (ti), and full text (tx). Acronyms are listed only if the author or publisher has made use of the acronym or if the test is widely known by the acronym. Author field includes both individuals and organizations. For individual authors, names display as last name, first name, and middle initial.
