This photomicrograph revealed the cytoarchitectural histopathologic changes detected in a lung biopsy tissue section from a Marburg patient (case #1) who was treated in Johannesburg, South Africa, 1975. Note the necrotic changes indicated by the breakdown of the alveolar walls resulting in pulmonary edema. There is also the presence of numerous alveolar macrophages due to the Filovirus infiltrate.
