Does the Main Library have an ATM (Automated Teller Machine) machine? Yes. It is located by the library's south entrance. 


Where can I get change for U.S. dollar bills? There is a dollar-bill changer located by the south entrance. NOTE: the change machine cannot recognize the "newer” dollar bills.  It accepts pre-2004 denominations up to $20 and provides change in quarters.


Where is a Fax machine I can use? There is no public Fax machine in the Main Library.  Campus Fax machines for student use at a minimal fee are available at the University Box Office (relocated back to the Iowa Memorial Union) or at Copy Center 3 in C102 Pappajohn Business Building [PBB] or Mossman Business Services Building [MBSB], 2222 Old Hwy 218 South.


May I bring food or beverages into the Main Library? Yes, though some areas are restricted, food and drink are allowed in the building. Soft drink vending machines provided by Coca-Cola Inc. are located in the north foyer, and on first floor, south, the Food for Thought Campus food counter stays open from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. most days to satisfy those late night study break munchies (see Main Library locations). Are graduate study carrels available? Yes. Study carrels for graduate students are located on fourth floor, east side of the Main Library. Applications for these desks are accepted in the Bookstacks Office, fourth floor, beginning at 8 a.m. on the first day of classes each semester, including summer semester. Are group study lounges available? Yes. These Main Library rooms are available to groups on a "first-come-first-served" basis:


Where else can I find study lounges? Study lounges might also be designated as "quiet areas" located on the Main Library's first floor—north Exhibition Lobby and south lobby—and on second floor, east and west study tables and north lounge.  There are also single study carrels alongside the shelving areas on 3rd, 4th and 5th floors.

Where can I find lockers? Lockers are on second floor, north and south, and on fourth and fifth floors, west, and are available to currently registered students. Application to reserve one of these 120 semester-use lockers should be made at the Bookstacks Office, fourth floor. There are no longer any coin-operated lockers for daily use. 

Where do I go for lost and found items? Items found in the Main Library are taken to north and south Circulation Desks, first floor. After seven days items are sent to the University of Iowa Lost and Found Office, located in University Capitol Centre, southwest corridor, ph. [319/38]4-2797.


Where can I find a mailbox and postal services? There is a mailbox on the corner of Madison and Washington streets, outside the library.  Postage stamps, UPS and Federal Express services are available from Printing Department services, ph. (319) 335-2699, or at Copy Center 3.


Where can I find photocopy machines? Photocopy machines in the Main Library are located on first, second, and third floors [floor plan PDF File]. Copiers take cash including quarters, dimes, nickels, one- and five-dollar bills. Copies cost 15¢ a page.  For additional copy services contact the UI Printing Department services, ph. (319) 335-2699, or Copy Center 3 in the Pappajohn Business Building, room 102C.

Where can I find restrooms?
1st floor: Central hallway, near Elevator A.  Also outside Shambaugh Auditorium.  See Main Library floor plan PDF File.
2nd & 3rd floors:  Northwest stairwells, women's only; northeast stairwells, men's only.
2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th floors: North and south ends of each central hallway.

Other restroom accommodations for persons in wheelchairs are provided on floors two through five, south end. 

 


Are office supplies available to Main Library users? Scissors, stapler and hole punch are located on a table next to photocopiers at the south end of first floor. There are pencil sharpeners on each floor, on centrally located posts on both east and west sides of the building.


Are public telephones available? Yes.  Public pay phones are located on first floor, north, and second floor, west corridor.


Is a campus telephone available? Yes.  A free campus telephone is located alongside the public pay telephones on first floor in the (west) stairwell near the north exhibition lobby. For off-campus phone calls there is a free telephone on second floor, east-west corridor.


May I smoke in the building? No. Smoking is banned in University of Iowa buildings and on state-owned property though allowed on city sidewalks such as those along both Madison and Burlington streets. PDF FileNo Smoking Boundary Map — Main Campus East.

Where can I find typewriters? There are no typewriters available in the Main Library. A typewriter is available to the public in the Iowa City Public Library, 123 South Linn Street (ph. 319/356-5200).


Where can I scan or print my documents? Scanners are available with the ITC (Instructional Technology Center) Windows and MacIntosh computers on first and second floors, and with the Government Collections computers on third floor. A slide scanner and a large-format scanner (11x17 inches) are available in the Art Library on second floor, room 2006. Printers are also available in the first, second and third floor ITCs.
