Facilities & Equipment in Main Library


Does the Main Library have an A.T.M. (Automated Teller Machine)? Yes. 
Inside the south entrance. 


Where are classrooms in the Main Library?
In the Main Library see sites for IARC | SHAM | TILE | more classrooms. Classrooms 2057, 2058, 3083, and Shambaugh Auditorium are reserved through Classroom Scheduling in the Office of the Registrar. Reference and Library Instruction librarians arrange instruction sessions for courses and those rooms are reserved by library personnel.


Where is a Fax machine I can use? Not here. There is no public Fax machine in the Main Library.

Fax services on campus are available at the University Box Office in the Iowa Memorial Union.


May I bring food or beverages into the Main Library? Yes.
Though some areas are restricted–foods, bottled water, coffee, juice, sodas in covered containers are allowed in the building. Vending machines providing Coca-Cola beverages are located inside the entrance, and on floor one, the Food-for-Thought Cafe offers hot coffee, salads, sandwiches, pastries and snacks. With the purchase of a library coffee mug you will receive discounts on coffee refills at all campus cafés.

It is your responsibility to throw away food wrappers and other debris. Please, also, report major spills to library staff immediately.


Are group study rooms available? Yes, on second floor there are 11 group studies, and also among undesignated areas on all floors.  "G" sign signifies group study area

Some areas in Main also provide room for small groups, available after 5 p.m. weekdays or on a first-come-first-served basis. Library staff only may reserve these group study spaces, and only under special circumstances. Conference rooms 2054 and 4041 are used by library staff during the day.

Where else can I study in the library? Study areas including comfortable lounge chairs are located on 1st floor—inside the south exit, among Reference materials and the east corridor—and on 2nd floor there are more study tables and a north "observation" lounge. Alongside bookshelf areas on all floors are study tables and desks.

Where can I find lockers for semester-long usage? You must reserve one.
In the Main Library lockers are on second, fourth and fifth floors and are available to currently registered students. Application to reserve one of these 120 lockers should be made at the Bookstacks Office, fourth floor.


Where do I look for lost and found items? South Circulation Desk. Unclaimed material found in the library are taken to the Circulation Desk, first floor. After seven days items are sent to UI Lost and Found Office, located in University Capitol Centre room 809 UCC basement, ph. (319)384-2797.


Where can I find a mailbox? 100 W. Washington Street.
There is a mailbox on the corner of Madison and Washington streets, northeast corner near library crosswalk.

And postal delivery services? UI Printing.
Postage stamps, United Parcel Service and Federal Express are available from UI Printing, ph. (319)335-2699, or at Copy Center PBB.


Where can I find photocopy machines in Main Library? On floors one, two and three.
There are four public photocopy machines in the building: two together in the computer room on 1st floor, and one each on 2nd and 3rd floors [floor directoryPDF File]. Copiers accept cash only—including quarters, dimes, nickels, one- and five-dollar bills. Copies cost 15ยข each. For more about photocopying in the UI Libraries, see self-service copying.

Where do I report problems with a photocopy machine? Phone (319) 335-5912 or visit the south Circulation Desk.


Where can I find restrooms?
On 1st floor: Central hallway, near Elevator A.  Also outside Shambaugh Auditorium.  See also Main Library map. [floor directoryPDF File]
2nd & 3rd floors:  Northwest stairwells, women's only; northeast stairwells, men's only.
2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th floors: North and south ends of each central hallway.Sign indicating FAMILY RESTROOM

On first floor is the family restroom in Main Library. Room 1028 next to the water fountain in the central corridor has a diaper-changing station and is wheelchair accessible.

Other restroom accommodations for persons in wheelchairs are provided on floors two through five, south end. On 4th floor also, the north end.


Are office supplies available to Main Library users? Yes. Scissors, stapler and hole punch are located on first floor in the Info/Ref ITC, on a table against the east wall. There are pencil sharpeners on all five floors, on centrally located posts on both east and west sides of the building.


Where may I smoke in the Main Library? On the grounds and sidewalks only.
Though smoking is banned in State of Iowa buildings and grounds, it is allowed on city sidewalks such as those along Madison and Burlington streets.

Are there telephones in the library? No.  A public pay phone is available in the University Capitol Centre (UCC). Campus-only telephones are available in some campus buildings and ITC's--not, however, in the Main Library.


Where can I find a typewriter? There are no typewriters available to the public in the Main Library.

A typewriter is available for public use, however, in the Iowa City Public Library,123 South Linn Street, ph. (319)356-5200.


Where can I scan or print my documents? On floors one, two, and three.
Scanners and printers are connected to I.T.C. (Instructional Technology Center) Windows and MacIntosh computers on 1st and 2nd floors, and among the Government Information reading room computer workstations, 3rd floor north.
