General Information
Electronic Article Desktop Delivery is a service available to any interested University of Iowa faculty, student, or staff in which journal articles or book chapters requested via Interlibrary Loan are sent in PDF format and reside on a HTTP server for viewing/printing by the requester.
How to request electronic delivery
Use the interlibrary loan request form for journal article/book chapter and select the "yes" option for electronic delivery. On the paper request forms, please check the box indicating the electronic delivery option. You will need to have an e-mail address listed on the request form in order to be notified. Electronic delivery of articles is optional. Articles can still be mailed to your home or campus address if you prefer. Choose the "no" option for electronic delivery to have the article mailed.
Notification and retrieval
An e-mail notification is sent when the article is available for viewing and/or printing. Delivery can take anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks. This e-mail message will contain a PIN number and a URL to the location of the article. Click on the URL and enter your full e-mail address and PIN. The PIN number is case sensitive and will need to be typed in exactly as it appears on the e-mail notification. Once entered, a link to the electronic version of the article will be shown. The length of time to download an article depends on your connection and the size of the article. From University of Iowa Libraries or other University networked computers, the download should be very rapid. Using a 56K modem, a twenty-page article can take as long as 20-30 minutes. Other available options will fall between these extremes. In addition, these articles can be very large so you may need to access them at a workstation that has a Zip drive or a CD burner.
System Requirements
1. A recent version of a web browser. There may be problems with browsers beyond Netscape and Internet Explorer. If you have problems accessing your document, please contact us immediately. We can always print out the article if the problems appear to be insurmountable.
2. Adobe Acrobat Reader, version 4 or higher if you wish to download your article. The download function is not a part of earlier versions. If you do not have the Adobe Acrobat Reader, it is available free of charge at the Adobe website.
Length of access
You are allowed 5 times to view the article, or 14 days, whichever comes first. The article will be removed and then deleted at this time. Please be aware that the article will be available 14 days from the date of notification, not the date you first view the article.
Limitations
There is not have a limit as to how many articles you can request. However, please keep in mind that you only have 14 days from the date of notification to view each article. Unfortunately, not all libraries have the capability of sending articles electronically. If we receive a paper copy of the item, it will only be mailed to you. In addition, other libraries may decide to mail articles if they contain detailed pictures, have tight bindings or are copies made from microfilm or oversized items.
Problems
If there are any pages missing or text that is illegible or cut off, please contact the Interlibrary Loan office immediately. We can be reached by phone at 335-5917 or by e-mail at lib-ill@uiowa.edu. Please have the citation information available so we can re-order the missing pages.
