Clicking on "Advanced Search", either from the "Basic Search" screen or from the options at the top of the screen, takes you to the "Advanced Search" screen. ONLY Keyword searches can be performed from the "Advanced Search" screen. A keyword search is more flexible than a browse search which retrieves an alphabetical or numerical list through which you can scroll for relevant entries. With a keyword search, you can ask the system to find keywords in a variety of fields and also limit your results by language, format, location, or date.
To perform a keyword search from the "Advanced Search" screen, start by selecting a search type from the pull-down menu. The default search type is "Keyword Anywhere". You may also choose to search by author words, title words, subject words, publisher/place words, etc. Once you have selected an appropriate search type, enter your search terms in the adjacent box. You may combine search terms using the Boolean operators, AND, OR, or NOT. Although phrase searches using quotation marks are not recognized by the system, you may indicate that you want the entered terms to be adjacent (in the order typed) by clicking on the "yes" or "no" boxes to the right of the search box.
If you get unexpected results, please reformulate your search.
The "Advanced Search" screen also provides opportunities to limit your search by language, format, location, or date.
Use the Language limit when you want items in a certain language. Example: to find a copy of the Aeneid in Latin, choose "Title Words", enter Aeneid, then select Latin from the "Language" limit pull-down menu.
Use the Format limit when you want materials in a certain format. Example: to find maps of Antarctica, enter Antarctica in a "Keyword Anywhere" search, then select "Map" from the "Format" limit pull-down menu. Available formats within the UI Libraries Catalog are Archival Material, Book, Computer File, Film, Government Document, Journal, Map, Microform, Newspaper, Online, Score, Serial, Slide, Sound Recording - Musical, or Sound Recording - Non-Musical, Theses and Dissertations, Video - All, Video - DVD only, and Video - VHS only. See Formats for descriptions. Available formats vary depending on the catalog being searched.
Within the UI Libraries Catalog, use the Location limit to find books in a specific branch library or location within the Main Library. Example: to find a reference book on archaeology in Egypt, enter Egypt and archaeology in a "Keyword Anywhere" search, then choose "MAIN Reference" from the Location pull-down menu.
Use the Date limit to restrict your results to a particular range of publication dates or a single year. Example: to find books on DNA published between 2000 and 2002, enter DNA in a "Keyword Anywhere" search, then enter 2000 in the Date From box and 2002 in the Date To box.
You can use more than one search limit in any given search. Example: to find Spanish language videos about opera you would select the "Advanced Search" screen, and type "opera" in the first search window. Then highlight "Video" under Format and "Spanish" under Language.
You can also search using only search limits. Example: to find all the German language journals in the Law Library, select "German" from the Language limit pull-down menu, "Journal" from the Format limit pull-down menu, and "Law Library" from the Location limit pull-down menu.
