Below is a list of definitions for each of the format limits available on the Advanced Search Screen within the UI Libraries Catalog:
Archival Material: items cataloged by Archives and Iowa Women’s Archives as archival collections
Book: a monographic publication
Computer File (Includes CD-ROMs): software, CD-ROMs, numeric data, computer oriented multimedia, etc.
Film: visual material (motion pictures) on film; does not include VHS, Optical Disks or DVD
Government Document: materials issued by a government agency
Journal: a magazine or periodical
Map: maps, atlases and globes
Microform: microfilm or microfiche material
Newspaper: a publication issued periodically, usually daily or weekly, containing the most recent news
Online: materials accessed via the computer or Internet
Score: printed or written version of a musical work in notational form
Serial: any publication issued in successive parts, appearing at intervals, and, as a rule, intended to be continued indefinitely
Slide: a visual positive image on transparent material, usually film, mounted in rigid format designed for projection
Sound Recording - Musical: a CD or phonograph record of musical material
Sound Recording - Non-Musical: a CD or phonograph record of spoken word material (e.g., poetry) or sound effects
Theses and Dissertations (Iowa): master's theses and doctoral dissertations completed at the University of Iowa
Video - All: any material in video format (VHS, Optical Disk, Beta, DVD, etc.)
Video - DVD Only: searches for DVD or video disc materials only
Video - VHS Only: searches for video cassette materials only
