Keyword Searching

Keyword searching can be done in either the Basic or Advanced Search Screens.

Keyword searching looks for words within the bibliographic record. Records are made up of many different fields, such as author, title, call number, etc. When you search by keyword you can specify whether you want to find a word or words "anywhere" or in specific fields. This is useful for narrowing or broadening your search.

Use keyword searches for retrieving items when you have limited or vague information (part of an author’s name, a few possible words in a title) or when you want a comprehensive retrieval of all occurrences of a word or words.

Phrase searching currently does not work. Words entered together will be searched as if combined by the Boolean operator “and”.

Start with a keyword search using a simple, one-word term. If that search returns too many hits, go back to the search form and add additional words. If you submit a keyword search and get "No records found" you should try a simpler search or an alternate term.

And, Or, Not

You can combine words using "and", "or", and "not". "And" and "not" narrow your search. "Or" broadens your search.

Examples: Sox or stockings will retrieve records with either or both terms.

Sox and white will retrieve only those records in which both terms occur.

Sox not white will retrieve only those records in which the term sox occurs but the term white does not occur.
