Getting Started

Please read these information pages carefully. They will help you get the most out of this tutorial.

Tutorial and PsycINFO Update

This tutorial has captured images from a particular date. Each day, there are new records or entries added to the PsycINFO database. Consequently if you do the same searches that are presented in the tutorial, the number of results may be different.

Navigation

If you have completed a similar tutorial before, or are comfortable setting up a second browser window with the application running, you can skip the setup and begin this tutorial now.

At the left is a table of contents for this tutorial. If you are familiar with PsycINFO, you may complete the entire tutorial or click on the sections you wish to review.

If this is your first time through, the easiest way to proceed is sequentially with the Previous and Next buttons below. You may also use the Back and Forward buttons in the browser window.

Learn at your own pace.

You may stop at each page, switch to the application, and practice the steps being taught before going to the next
. To practice, you will have 2 browser pages open on the screen at the same time.

Depending on the size of the monitor, it may be necessary to overlap the two windows.

Click this button to open a second Web Window.
It may cover up this screen.
Be ready to use the mouse to size both windows.

Size the windows on the monitor so that they are next to each other, or overlap one on top of the other. Leave one of the edges showing.

Practice Having Two Web-Windows Open

First click the PsycINFO window and then click the tutorial window.

Practice switching back and forth between the tutorial and PsycINFO windows by clicking inside each window with the mouse.

Searching is based on your own personal style. Your experience with the database, your own learning or research style, and experimentation will increase your effectiveness at finding the information you need.

Potential Problems

The PsycINFO Ovid database will automatically log you out if there is no activity in the database for 15 minutes. This is not a problem if you are proceeding through the tutorial at a normal pace. If you are timed out, reenter the information.

Keep in mind which section you are in, and you can use the menu on the left to easily return to where you left off.

Ovid-Online is down for a brief time on Saturday evenings for system maintenance and updates. This period may last up to four hours beginning anytime between 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm but is usually no more than an hour.

If it is not Saturday evening and you are denied access, there may be too many users. Wait a few minutes and try the system again. If you cannot get into the system after a period of time, contact library staff for assistance.
