Return to: 20th Century U. S. Imprints in the Smith Collection

The portion of this website in front of you brings together in preliminary fashion a variety of lists and descriptions for United States Miniature Books published during the Twentieth Century. The books have then been organized by press or publisher as described in Robert C. Bradbury’s Twentieth Century United States Miniature Books (No. Clarendon, Vermont: The Microbibliophile, 2000). This page describes titles held by the University of Iowa Libraries for the press or publisher described below. The descriptions generally follow Bradbury’s format: Author. Title. Imprint (if it varies from the heading), date. Size in inches. Number of pages. Brief physical description. Illustrations note. Copy # of [##] copies.

De Vinne, Theodore Low. Upon Small Types, the Preface of Brilliants. Brooklyn, NY, Trader’s Press, 1969. 27pp. 2-1/4″ x 1-3/4″. Colophon: This is a privately published book. H.O. Bullard, N.Y., set 6 point on 9 Optima, and it was reduced to 4 point on 6 (or with 2 points leading). Optima was designed by Herman Zapf. I pasted up the repros and made the little designs. Then Willis MacDonald Co., Inc., N.Y. printed the book offset. The paper is Olin’s Waylite. This bright opaque sheet adds legibility to small letters. Its acid free composition will prevent these pages from becoming yellow and brittle in a few years. T.C. Woolnough & Son, Ltd. in London bound these sheets by hand with great care and skill. I feel that the best way for a book to be prized and saved is to put it in a good binding. Years later, if the contents have any merit, a few copies will have survived. #182 of 500 copies.
