Franklin, Benjamin. Advice to a Young Man on Choosing a Mistress. Berkeley, CA: Poole Press, 1982. 25 pp. 2″ x 1 7/8″. Colophon: Franklin’s letter to a hypothetical correspondent is reproduced herein a setting popular in 15th century France: heart shaped illuminated manuscripts. One of these, a songbook made for cleric Jean de Montchenu, is a treasure of the bibliotheque Nationale. The idea of this books is to the to feeling of a illuminated manuscript by using 18th Century Fournier fleurons and chapbook illustrations, and thereby provide an appropriate setting for Franklin’s wit. The type is Deepdene, set by Mackenzie-Harris and printed letterpress on Frankfurt Cream paper. of 100 copies printed, numbers 1-30 are specially bound and contain a St. Helena issue stamp depicting the Great Fire. Carroll, Lewis. Jabberwocky. Berkeley, CA: Poole Press, 1996. (10) pp. 2 1/4″ x 2 7/8″. Colophon: The mirrored setting for Jabberwocky was inspired by a “perspective cabinet” on display at Penshurst place in Kent, UK. A type of anamorphic art, perspective cabinets were a phenomenon practiced by certain Dutch masters as art curiosities. Some owner simple, like this example; others extremely elaborate, with mirros on both vertical and horizontal planes, reflecting very distorted paintings, which, when seen through a peephole, metamorphosed to perfect order.
