Where Many Have Gone Before: Re-launching Star Trek
Star Trek returns in May 2009 with a new cast playing the iconic roles of Kirk, Spock, and the Enterprise crew. The history of Star Trek fandom, and a look behind the scenes of earlier films, can be seen in Special Collections. The M. Horvat Collection of Science Fiction fanzines contains many examples of how Star Trek fandom developed. The Papers of Nicholas Meyer, director of Star Trek II and VI, and co-writer of Star Trek IV, offers a glimpse at the filmmaking process, and documents Meyer’s interactions with fans as he attempted to revive the franchise - the same situation the new film’s director, J.J. Abrams, is in today.
See items such as the first Star Trek fanzine from 1967, Spockanalia, early fan club material, and highlights from Nicholas Meyer's work on the Star Trek movies: a script, storyboards, and correspondence from Star Trek II, Meyer's reactions to the first draft of the Star Trek III script, an early version of the Star Trek IV script, and concept art from Star Trek VI.
