On Iowa: 1900-1930

Old Capitol following first major restoration, ca. 1930.

By the early 1900's, Old Cap had become firmly entrenched as the heart of the university.

Unfortunately, its foundation was not so firm. By 1920, the building urgently needed restoration work. The southwest corner was nearly one foot lower than the opposite side, and the lack of a firewall in the upper level made the landmark vulnerable to lightning damage.

"…in a lightning storm this grand old building might some day be burned and the State suffer an irreparable loss. [We requested] exact drawings of the building and its many details in order that the building could, if necessary, be replaced."
