Charles R. Clark, Iowa Schoolteacher

Charles R. Clark left New Hampshire to become a schoolteacher in Montezuma, Poweshick County, Iowa, in the 1860s, and this collection consists of 18 letters addressed to him by his mother, younger brother, and sister from their home in Plymouth, Grafton County, New Hampshire, and by some Iowa friends and colleagues between 1866 and 1868.
Of particular interest from are letters from a traveling book salesman friend and others from booksellers in Davenport and publishers in Chicago which cast light on the text book trade in Iowa just after the Civil War.
The collection was acquired with funds from the Homer L. Calkin Fund created by Mary K. Calkin.
