This opening is from Emblems Divine and Moral by Francis Quarles (London: John Bennett, 1839), one of a group of 18th and 19th century emblem books given the Libraries by Fritz Cohen. Emblem books combined bits of wisdom, often expressed in poetry, with images which graphically represented the same idea. A reader could consequently study and memorize the elements of the image and thus be able to recall the details of the text. These books were extremely popular from the mid-16th century.
