The First Mexican-American Cookbook
M&S
Books, Providence, RI, from whom we acquired this item, describes it
as follows:
Brown and Brown 4202. Not in NUC. Nothing earlier on Mexican cooking listed by B & B, probable dating on the basis of textual reference to Mexican president Diaz. The text claims this is the first Mexican cookbook ever printed (presumably for Americans). The covers were lithographed in New York. Features "the original chili powder".
Although there are recipes for chicken, cheese, egg, fish, game, oysters and other foods -- chilis, enchiladas, envueltos, tamales, tortillas, and more -- this recipe for Lonches de Chili - Chili Sandwich sticks in the mind:
Slice bread thin and butter. Lay between the slices crisp lettuce leaf and sprinkle well with Gebhardt's Eagle Chili Powder and a few drops of lemon juice.
