Iowa Native Spaces

Iowa Native Spaces is a public humanities project which seeks to address the nature of American historical consciousness, particularly as it relates to American Indian and U.S. history. Using digital mapping, we seek to circulate a new set of narratives that challenge conventional readings of indigenous pasts, presents and futures. Alternative perspectives highlight the achievements of indigenous ancestors; the interactions and complexities involved in colonialism; indigenous survival and persistence across time; contemporary Native sovereignty and rights to self-definition; and the continuing production and contributions of indigenous knowledge to a sustainable and just global future—while also commenting on how and why these perspectives have received such limited attention to date, outside of small and selective circles.
