Mabbott Poe Papers

Mabbott Poe is an online resource based on the papers of Thomas Ollive Mabbott (1898-1968), life-long numismatist; professor of English Literature; expert on the works of Milton, Whitman, and others; and, perhaps most famously, editor of the Collected Works of Edgar Allan Poe. The centerpiece of Mabbott Poe is an exhibit of Mabbott’s research files on Poe’s works in prose and poetry. These contain many of Poe’s probable or actual sources for his tales and poems, first printings as well as reprints in their original periodicals or in facsimile, Mabbott’s as well as his wife Maureen Cobb Mabbott’s notes, and various other intriguing materials. The exhibit provides a model of primary source research, and as such might also serve as a useful teaching tool. As the files also represent a research and editing process from a previous era, it invites critical evaluation and historical contextualization.
