Ms. Lougee will discuss current trends and issues related to building digital collections from a national and international perspective and the implications these have for local efforts.

Image Retrieval
David Eichmann, University of Iowa

Professor Eichmann will summarize challenges involved in image retrieval methods available for application to digital collections.

QBIC Project
J.M. Gorecki, IBM

Ms Gorecki will provide highlights and a demo on the IBM image retrieval software Query By Image Context (QBIC).

Session A - Christopher Roy and Linda McIntyre, University of Iowa
Art and Life in Africa Project -- Multimedia Focus

Professor Roy and Dr. McIntyre will discuss their multimedia CD and web-based project "Art and Life in Africa" funded by a U.S. Dept. of Education FIPSE grant. Art and Life in Africa is a multimedia, interactive textbook on sub-Saharan African art and culture. Portions of the project are also available on the web (http://www.uiowa.edu/~africart).

Session B - Brooks Landon and Padmini Srinivasan, University of Iowa
Aspects of Full Text and SGML.

Professors Landon and Srinivasan will provide comments regarding full text applications for digital collections and especially the power of SGML encoding (markup language) in enhancing the usefulness of electronic full text materials for scholars and students.

Michigan Metadata Project and Data Crosswalk
Wendy Lougee, University of Michigan

Dr. Younger and Ms. Lougee will review major national and regional projects to effectively access large digital databases. Younger will also discuss national recommendations and proposals for the development of "metadata" that can support reliable discovery and retrieval of electronic documents.
